ChrisinBrisbane Report 13 Jun 2008 04:54

Hi all,

I have in my tree, my granfathers sister Gladys M Dyson (b 1898) who was 'adopted' by the Hardebeck family. This lady is proving to be most elusive and I have now had to cast a very wide net in the hopes of finding her.

On freeBMD there is a marriage listed between Gladys and John J Ashton and I'm hoping that this could be the connection I'm after, to be able to see what happened to Gladys.

If this information means anything to anybody, please email me as there is a whole family who would love to make contact with any descendants.

Hi everyone,

I know that this is an old posting of mine, but the questions still remain. I am no further forward on this line of enquiry, so I am hoping that in the intervening years someone may have some new info to help me out.

Fresh eyes, if you will.

Thanks

Chris

Firstly please edit your original post so as to delete your e mail address which isn't allowed on here, before someone reports your thread and has it taken off the board.

Secondly, do you have a location for Gladys's birth ?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Back in 2008 it was allowed to have your email on the boards. Now edited out - thanks for the heads up on that.

My Gladys is the one born in Islington. Given your further info, this is not the marriage I was hoping for. Gladys middle name is Matilda, and Lord knows what she may have been doing in Yorkshire. She was taken in by the Hardebeck family as Her aunt Matilda was married to Carl (his second wife) and they had possibly 3 other daughters. This was simply an enquiry that was clutching at straws, and has proven to be false. I am really at a loss as to where I might find this lady.

Gladys brother Alex (my maternal grandfather was taken in by his Uncle Frederick Dyson who was, and remained childless.

This all happened in the early 1900's and I'm sorry but that is as close as I can come to a date. Their father, it was thought for a long time had died, but he actually remarried.

It was also thought that Gladys went to America and became an actress. I have found that she did go to Canada aboard the "empress of Australia" in 1927, but despite my best effort to locate her in either Canada or the US have not been very successful. I have looked for the real names of actress's but this also has been unsuccessful. Given that I don't know what happened to her, I have no idea as to date of death either.

Glitterbaby,

I did not get the marriage cert because I simply was not confident that this was the right marriage. Not having the budget to constantly get certificates, means I have to wait (usually) for on line sources to become available, or to rely on others who may have access to records that I simply do not have.

Thanks you both for your effort thus far. I think it is going to be one of those brick walls we all have in our research.

Regards
