I've only just seen this thread!
I notice he was 9th Battalion of the Foresters.I found this on a Site called Chesterfield Foresters on the Somme, about a George Orridge of the 9th Battalion,

152. Pte. George Orridge (9th Battn), wounded in the chest, shoulder, hands and legs. A resident of Pilsley he had been on active service for fifteen months, seeing action in the Dardanelles and Egypt. Married.

It is possible that he recovered enough from these wounds to eventually be put into the DLI .. We needed every man to stop the massive German offensive in 1918.

I believe that the Orridges of Thringstone are descended from a William Orridge born at Wysall in 1796. I am descended from his younger brother,Henry.

I may do that Ann - Just hope uncle can wait that long as he's 90 now. Don't think I'll tell him i'm going to look further into it in case he gets his hopes up.

The references on the medal card would lead you to the medal roll (only at Kew), which would give his battalion, so you could find out what he was involved in. Only problem is, it wouldn't tell you when he transferred to DLI. You could wait to see if his service records appear on Ancestry first.

Oh Maureen that definitely sounds more like it. Is it possible to find out more from the regimental number like where he served etc and if so do you know how I go about it.

You beat me to it - was just going to add the medal card info! So he was in the local regiment, but then transferred to DLI. Nothing unusual in that. His records might be at Kew - Ancestry doesn't have O surnames on there yet for the WO363 series of service records.

Ann, no I have no idea where his service medal would be. Like most people doing this, you decide to do it when most people who could have helped have died.
As i said its a stab in the dark - my uncle seemed to think it was Sherwood Foresters and I thought you joined your local regiment in the first world war, but obviously from what you've said I could be wrong. Does that make it impossible - I assume it does

Don't make the assumption Jenny Wren, that just because he lived in Notts he joined the local regiment - not necessarily the case. Have you found a medal card for him, which will give his regiment (s)

Have ruled out the George I was looking at. There is a birth for Elzabeth in 1916 but mothers maiden name does not match

Do you know if the service records are complete. I've got to say I'm assuming he would have been in the Sherwood Foresters as he was living in Nottinghamshire. Could that be wrong

He only fathered one child in the war (as far as I know anyway!) and that was my mum Ellen born April 1915

Notts and Derbys IS the Sherwood Foresters!

Was just takin a look at George Orridge - does say Notts & Derbys but also mentions Sherwood Foresters.

Not found any mention of a wife.

Does mention Elizabeth Ann 31.3.16 and Elsie 9.10.17

Wife was Rebecca

According to his birth certificate, although lived in Notts predominantly he was born in the sub district of Rotherham

That William is Sherwood Foresters only served 25 days

Wife Mary - 21 New Cross St, Sutton in Ashfield

His home address would have been Nottinghamshire - probably Beeston but not necessarily
