Definitely not that SMAILES is spelt wrong. I believe that Thomas Smailes married a jane and they had 5 children John, Robert, Thomas, James and William and James was married twice and thats why i got confused. I only need to find out what year the brothers were born in and ther mothers maiden name. Thank you everyone who has been helping

I know Smailes varies its spelling - don't forget literacy levels were lower in those days - and the person writing the census details down would have written what he thought was said. You wouldn't believe the interesting spellings I've had for some members of my family - but I know they are the right ones from the names and ages of siblings.

You can work out brothers years of birth from 1851 census.
