Would someone be so kind as to help me trace more information on my gr grandfather George Spittle. I have the following information so far.

Father: George Burnett Spittle - farm labourer
Gertrude Amelia Jones - age 39yrs - spinster

I have only been able to find him in the 1901 census:

Dear Jill,

Thanks for your help.

I don't believe this is him in the 1891 census you have posted as Stoke Newington fell under district Hackney and not Pancras. Looking on the map Stoke Newington is on the outer border of north London. Also, he does not appear to have a middle name. His fathers middle name is stated as Burnett which does not begin with an S either. I have the marriage cert of his youngest daughter Ivy Spittle in Hammersmith dated 23 Dec 1934 and again he is simply called George Spittle.

I hope I don't sound rude with the above. I'm just trying to think out loud.

Best regards,
Rebecca

If on the main page of Ancestry you type Spittle (surname) and Barnett (forename) quite an odd little list comes up.

There must be a connection to your man ...

Jill,

Agree that George S and Margaret married Strand are NOT his. So we can exclude that 1891 census.

That's fine Rebecca - I'm just bouncing info around a bit.

You don't always get middle names/initials showing on censuses by the way. I've discounted that 1891 that I found anyway as they don't seem right.

Dear Alice,

With regards to the birth regs in 1871 I don't believe he is the George Spittle in Kensington as Stoke Newington fell under district Hackney according to the UKGEN info. If you know/think differently, please correct me.

Thanks, Rebecca

Dear West Country Lass,

I don't think this is him. It doesn't look like he had a middle name and I believe the birth place is Stoke Mandeville for this census extract and not Stoke Newington.

Thanks, Rebecca

It's possible that George Barnett (1901) died young. In which case your father may not have known about him.

Dear Richard,

I have seen the census extract you have posted, but discarded it as it states Stoke Mandeville and not Stoke Newington as the birth place.

Many thanks,

Rebecca - do you have any other documentation that tells you he was born in Stoke Newington? If not, then keep an open mind for a while about the Stoke Mandeville findings.

Also, keep an open mind about the Barnett connections.

It may not all help at the moment but it may fit in later with other information.

That's something I didn't think of. I will try to trace a deather of this George Barnett on FreeBMD to see if that might work out. Interesting thought. Only question I would raise is that his fathers middle name is spelt with a U = BURNETT and not Barnett. I've seen a lot of different spellings of names, so this might not be so out of key.

I'll let you know if I find an early death.

Thanks,
Rebecca

Rebecca Report 24 Jul 2008 19:45

Jill,

No other doc other than the definitely correct 1901 census that states Stoke Newington. I've seen a real Spittle community in Stoke Mandeville on a lot of census material and I thought I'd hit the jackpot with Richards census posting when I found it 2 weeks ago. Maybe it still could be right. I found the Sarah Weston in it again though and she was NOT their mother as she had other children in another census (which I did not save....).

Regards,
Rebecca
