Hi Amanda,

When you've got the birth cert for your Granda, then we may be able to pick up the thread again and find his siblings.

Hi Amanda,

It's a possibility, in my families instance though, all the money had dried up after 3 generations (sods law!!)
So if your family still had property then there's a strong possibility that this could fall nicely into place. Do you know where Thomas Oliver carried out his Artitecture, was it in London??

aahhhh ok . i was told my granda went to london to stay with a sister after the war which would connect with the properties i think . does this sound possible

Hi Amanda

"your" Thomas didn't marry Ann as he was married to Elizabeth in 1840. I have removed incorrect census to avoid confusion

Amanda

Amanda Report 28 Jul 2008 18:28

thank you very much for all your help xxxxx but if charles died in 1855 he would have been only 8-9yrs old so they must have had other children or maybe his first wife anne ?

Hi Denise

the only births for Thomas are in my earlier post but I have found this one for Robert with same parents as one of them

23/04/1786 OLIVER ROBERT ROBERT OLIVER/SUSAN CAVERHILL FR1642 U Jedburgh /ROXBURGH 792/ 0050 0223

12/01/1788 OLIVER THOMAS ROBERT OLIVER/SUSAN CAVERHILL FR1651 U Jedburgh /ROXBURGH 792/ 0050 0232

Thomas is a bit younger though

EDIT I think that should have been older lol

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 28 Jul 2008 18:05

Amanda, this may be another child;

Births Sep 1840 (>99%)
Oliver Joshua Stockport 19 229

EDIT THIS SHOULD BE JOSEPH OLIVER

Births Dec 1840 (>99%)
Oliver Joseph Gateshead 24 121
Oliver Joseph Broadley Bury 21 239

What is your Granda date of birth and his name, trying to find out what child of Thomas and Elizabeths you descend from. At the mo we've only found the 2 children on census returns, so presumably your link would be one of them,

Amanda

Amanda Report 28 Jul 2008 17:58

Right i'm back, bit of general background info.

The Oliver surname is a common one in and around the Scottish borders, Eccles, Hounam, Oxnam, Kelso, Srouston and Roxburgh will nearly always appear connected to the surname when you search any trees and records.

It's highly likely that earlier generations are connected to the area and several of the births, marriages and deaths associated with the family could be either in England or Scotland.

Often especially in the early census folks would put Scotland as place of birth when they were in fact born in Berwick.

Berwick (or Berwick upon Tweed to be correct) is in Northumberland, England.
Berwickshire is a county in Scotland, it sits right on the border with England.

So Berwick=England
Berwickshire=Scotland

BUT often the two get mixed up, especially in early census returns, you will have to keep an open mind as to whether Berwick or Berwickshire applies when you look at certain records.

By the time you get to Roxburgh, Hounam, Kelso and Oxnam you are looking at the adjacent county of Roxburghshire, Scotland.

It might be worth considering joining the Borders Family History Society, they have access to and produce lots of info for folks researching the area. There are literally dozens of researchers looking at the Oliver surname and even of you don't find someone researching the exact same family lines you will find someone who has most likely trod over the same ground as you will be looking at.

Some useful website links for Berwickshire can be found at;
