I am going to bed, I cannot see the wood for the trees, and we dont seem to be coming up with anything concrete.

Write down what you know about Cecile and Madeline- who were they to you?

I'll look in again in the morning, and see where we are at

where and when did madeline/maud die?
what was her married name?

was Annie Field the mother of either Cecile or Harold and it was her second marriage to Mr Fields??

Elaine Margaret

Elaine Margaret Report 29 Jul 2008 23:35

we dont think that Annie Field was married. It is possible she could be Cecile and Madeleines mother but the dates dont tie in if she was witness on Harry Melvyns death cretificate. The witness at Cecile and Harry,s wedding Harold Nicholls could possibly have married a Rebecca Thompson.
Madeleine never married. We are struggling to find Samuel Webster who is named as Ceciles father on the wedding certificate.

Penny Report 30 Jul 2008 06:39

all this time faffing about, yet you knew madeline didn't marry, and where and when she died

Name: Madeleine Thompson
Birth Date: 11 May 1909

Age at death (estimated): 87
Registration district: Halifax
Inferred County: Yorkshire
Register number: B16C
District and Subdistrict: 0841B

look at that - her death reg tells us how old she was

Penny

Penny Report 30 Jul 2008 07:05

to Summarise..

Cecile & Madeline THOMPSON were sisters

Cecile married Harry M Webster (born 1904) in halifax in 1927

Madeline never married & died in Halifax in 1996 age 87

I cannot see a death for Cecile Webster (between 1984-2005 anyway)<<<<when did she die please

Ceciles husband Harry died at some point, his death was registered by Annie Field.<<when did he die please

M & C's Father was called Samuel , mother ( dont know)

Annie & Harry FIELD seem to be significant names

Victoria Report 30 Jul 2008 08:28

annie and harold (not harry field) cecile died 1980,harry died 1975

Elaine Margaret

Elaine Margaret Report 30 Jul 2008 08:49

Harry died in 1974 or75
Cecile died in 1980
I think we are all getting a bit confused,Minnie thanks for sticking with us, we cant find a birth certificate for Cecile know her birthday was 26 August and from her death certificate it was 1908,the person we are really trying to find is her father Samuel Thompson named on her wedding certificate although he might not have been at the wedding.

If Annie Field was born in the early 1900s her surname would be different, she was named on the wedding certificate of Cecile and Harry and on Harry,s death certificate both as Field, so can you tell me please how do I find her maiden name. Also the other person on the wedding certificate was Harold Nicholl I have found a marriage that could possibly be him, in Sheffield 1924 to a Rebecca Thompson I cant find anything else relating to her, I think that with her being a Thompson might it might be she is cousin? to Cecile and Madeleine where is Morse when you need him.

1908..

Surname Thompson,,,,,July/ Sept,

Cecilia Victoria Thompson,,,,Fulham,
Cicely Ellen Thompson,..Hartlepool......

Have you checked Scotland for a birth??or under Thomson,,,,,,,,,

1909,,July /Sept.
Thompson Cecilia.----------Preston,,

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Jul 2008 09:47

her death 1980...

Birth year is recorded as 1907 and not 1908 ......!!!

Perhaps this is her birth,,,,and recorded as,,,,,,,

Cecilia Thompson.....1907--

Rotherham,Yorkshire,,,,,

July/Sept.

9c Vol--Page,,845,,,,,,,,

Maybe having this birth cert will confirm parents,,,,,

Elaine Margaret

Elaine Margaret Report 30 Jul 2008 10:01

Yes Kay it might be worth a look, we have come across this one before but discounted it because the spelling is different, but we do keep coming back to it, plus Rotherham is not a million miles from Sheffield [the Rebecca connection], although we dont seem able to find anything on sister Madeleine 11th May 1910.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Jul 2008 10:12

the spelling may not be as youve known it,but her death shows she was bn 1907 and not 1908 as someone stated,,,,,,

This birth looks like its worth taking a shot at,,,,,dont forget the information given on any certificate is only as reliable as the informant gives,,,....

Elaine Margaret

Elaine Margaret Report 30 Jul 2008 10:17

Thanks Kay, it was me who thought 1907, I dont know where I got that from but we will get that certificate like you say its worth a shot, we,ll know on way or another then.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 30 Jul 2008 10:45

Not every birth regestered has made it into the GRO index,,,so it may be worth asking at the Rotherham register offcice, also her name may not have been registered just Madeline,,but with another name,,,but you have a fathers name to check against so thats a help at the register office,,,,,,

Penny

Penny Report 30 Jul 2008 11:28

Madeline was , of course, commonly known as Maud.

I wouldn't take a lot of notice of spelling at this stage - lets face it - Harry Melvyn - (the way it was registered at his birth) and the way you say it is recorded on his marriage cert ( the index just says Harry M, which if his second name is used on the cert is most unusual) again is different, but clearly the same person.

Whilst we have not idea where she came from, her father could have been anywhere in the country in 1901 , or indeed out of the country - married, not married, and anything between 10 years old and 40 odd..... all we have is a name .

I can list all the Samuel Thompsons that show on 1901 - but I cannot see any point - it gives us no clue as to which one he is!

Can i just say, that in the second reply to you, I asked how old she was when she married - it would have been helpful to say that although the marriage cert was unclear as to her age, that her death cert suggested she was born 1907-1908 -

Penny

Penny Report 30 Jul 2008 11:36

the only suggestion I can come up with -( and we dont even know that they were married, they could have been brother and sister) is this marriage.

its the only one ''up north'' around the right sort of time..

what does its tell us? not a lot
