Hello

I'm still in a muddle regarding the James Hartnell who married Mary Carpenter in 1802 at St John's Church, Wellington, Somerset.

Can someone please help me find a census with both James and Mary together. I do wonder if Mary died before 1841 census and James remarried???

Sorry its a bit of read to get to this message. Hope someone can help me on my quest to find James and Mary.

Thanks Kaye

Hi Dea

Thanks for the update, its certainly interesting.

I think that my Mary and James resided in the Awlescombe area because of the baptism of Hartnell, William 09 Dec 1813 James/Mary, farmer, Combe. If I understand correctly is it possible this means the parents resided in Combe.

I haven't come across from my research, from the past or present the names of Milton, Clapp, Fourace, England or Daw.

I have got a hint that James Hartnell born c.1771 could have been a brother of Bishop Hartnell b.1775 at Clayhidon. This Bishop married Joan and my James married Mary Carpenter. As long as I have found the correct James and Mary marriage.

Thanks Dea, appreciate your help. If I can give you any other info please let me know.

Hi Dea,

I'm in Aust. Thank you for your message.

I'm so pleased you may have found a connection as to why William married at St James. You are right, having another closer look at the marriage cert Elizabeth's surname is Buncombe. Do you know which Hotel Benjamin Chappell was a Publican?

There has been mention that James' father was Bishop Hartnell b 1775 at Clayhidon married to Joan. This I haven't found or proven as yet. Still working on James and Mary. I don't have access to Ancestry.

I haven't worked out the mother's maiden name for Mary Ann and Elizabeth Wensley's mother as yet. 'Venn' comes up a lot but from what I have seen its the wrong children. I have seen 'Slape' but haven't proven this.

I don't think I have had so much fun as I am doing this tree. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi,

Yes, we must be - I am in the UK - where are you?

It IS James + Mary I am looking for - I MAY have found her on 1841 but pure guesswork at the moment - I need to follow all the details through all the census to be able to find the connection.

It is looking hopeful now but needs a lot more work.

I will keep you posted,

Dea x

P.S. - At least I now half understand why they married in Westminster - it was a family connection to the witness Benjamin Chappell who was a Publican in St. James - perhaps he offered his 'Pub' as a venue for the 'do' ??

The other witness - could you check if her name could be Buncombe??

If so, she would probably be Elizabeth + Mary Ann's sister Charlotte's daughter - this helps though to confirm the correct William and Mary Wensley back through the census as there are two of them in the same area at the same time!

Anyway I will re-check all the details and post them as soon as they are sorted.

H Dea,

We must be in different time zones. Thank you for your response.

William married Elizabeth Wensley (2nd marriage) in 1869 at St James Westminister (why there I don't know as he lived in Sampford Arundell). From the marriage certificate it states she is a spinster and he a widower both of 'full age'. His occupation 'butcher'. His father James (farmer) deceased, her father William (farmer) deceased. From this relationship they had only one child, Charles born 1871 in Wellington, Somerset. Witnesses on marriage cert are Benjamin Chappell and Elizabeth Duncombe.

William's first and second wife from Census info I have on the Wensley family they appear to be sisters.

The first wife Mary Anne Wensley died in 1866 aged 47 years, she is buried at the Holy Cross Church Sampford (from National Burial Index)

Robert and William died in their first two years of life.

I haven't come across the name Fourace at all during my research.

My current search is more about finding census info on William's parents James and Mary from the Combe area and/or, the area of Honiton.

The only things I have found odd, is why William shaved approx 3 years off his birth age throughout his census and why he married the second time in Westminister. The marriage cert also states that their place of residence is also St James. But the next census has them back in Sampford with some of William's first marriage children living with him.

Hope this helps, stay in touch. If you can help with Census for James and Mary that would be terrific. Appreciate your time helping me.

Kind regards Kaye

Hi,

Been working on this 'on and off' all day - something doesn't add up here!

Who did William marry in 1869 and where?

Was his second wife related to his first wife?

Could you give all the details from the wedding cert please?

Do you know when his first wife died?

What happened to children - Robert c 1838 and William c 1841 (Or have I got the wrong one here?)

Do you know of any connection to the name Fouracre?

Hello,

I have just received from some additional information from another researcher who is connected via marriage to William's son / James' grandson John Nott Hartnell.

His information indicates James was born 8 July 1771 and married 04 May 1802 to Mary Carpenter. It shows they had the following children

James b. 1806 Ptiminster
Thomas b. 1809 "
George b.1812 "
William b. 1813 "
Robert b.1818 "
Mary b.1824 "

It appears that my William was 99.9% born in 1813 not 1816 as his Census would have you thinking.

If someone would please be kind enough to have a look for census for James and Mary that would be appreciated.

Thanking you.

I have had a look at the Pitminister Baptisms for St Mary and St Andrews 1649-1886 and the following William's were baptised there:

William baptised 5 Oct 1817 parents William & Hannah
William baptised 9 Dec 1813 parents James & Mary
William baptised 13 Feb 1848 parents William & Elizabeth (not possible due to year of birth)

When reviewing all the Census for my WIlliam they indicate :-
1841 William's b. 1816
1851 b. 1813
1861 b 1817
1881 b 1817
1891 b 1815
1901 b 1816
1901 Death b. 1816 so could be pretty safe assuming his was born 1816.

Can someone please help find the marriage details for James Hartnell and Mary in the Somerset region. Can I please ask also would someone be kind enough to search for the 1841 and 1871 Census for James and Mary, Wellington, Somerset.

From William's second marriage it shows his father was James a Farmer and was deceased by 1869.

Thanking you very much
Regards Kaye

Thanks

Hi DiddyDoris,

Thank you, they are both great sites with many Hartnell's, appreciate the time you have given to this.

I'm pretty sure William was born in 1816 but will go over all my dates again to make sure. I have a feeling there were two "William" around the same age and locality.

Thanks again
