Please would someone advise me if I am thinking correctly.
I have my great grandfathers marriage cert and there is no fathers name on it. I have so far been unable to find him anywhere.
His name William Henry Moorhouse c1865.
The 2 witnesses are named as John Henry Moorhouse and Ann Elizabeth King.
Today I have been to the library and found on 1871 census in Keighly

Ann Elizabeth Moorhouse (widow) 36
Clara Ann Priscilla Moorhouse 9
William Henry Moorhouse 5
John Henry Moorhouse 2

My hunch is the witnesses were his brother and mother (I'm guessing she'd remarried by 1888 (when William married Sarah Mason)

Am I on the right track, or completely off the wall.
I haven't been able to find a remarriage for Ann Elizabeth.

Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Thankyou for reading this.
Kind Regards, Sarah

the only reason for not having a fathers name on the wedding cert that i can think of is he didn't know who his father was. if his dad was dead by then it should have his name then deceased written underneath.

which census returns have you looked at?

Hello Sam
Many thanks for replying
I looked at 1871 census on Ancestry at local library registration district Keighley.
Ann Elizabeth is listed as a Worsted weaver which fits what I do know about the family

Think ordering clara's birth cert might answer a few questions.

I cant find Ann Elizabeth on the 1861 census have you looked at the 1881,91,1901?

Thanks for that Sam
I didn't get chance to look for the family in other censuses - my booking time ran out and I dont have access at home.
I had thought Ann Elizabeth may have been married on the 1861 census because of Clara's age on '71.
Do you think I may be on the right lines?

Births Jun 1853 (98%)

Moorhouse William Henry Keighley 9a 170

I think the only way of finding the answer will be to order a birth cert.

I can't find a marriage of Ann Elizabeth Moorhouse, doesn't mean she didn't marry again of course. I can't find them before or after 1871 :( they could be mistranscribed of course!

craftykitten Report 18 Aug 2008 20:43

Thanks for that ref.
The area Keighley is a new one to me. All the family I have found so far have been in and around Bradford.Having said that my William Henry (1865) was known as a wanderer within the family, so it's likely he didn't come from Bradford, just left his family there!!!!

Maybe Ann Elizabeth wasn't married???Just said she was a widow for the officials????

seems very likely

I found a marriage for an Ann Elizabeth Moorhouse in Wortley Jun 1879 9c 282 but I looked for a partner in the name of KING because of the witness name.
Sounds as if this maybe another brick wall if she cant be found on other census years. Must be a family trait!!!
