Hi Andy, no I havn't seen this one, and I think it is Thomas with his mother Mary, and just when I had given up hope of getting some answers!! This also, gives me some indication when Richard and Mary died.

Hi Linda, thanks for your help, as no one as managed to find them on any census returns together, I think I am just going to have to accept that this is one mystery I may never solve. The unfortunate thing is not being able to establish who Bessy's parents were.

Maybe his mother did and dad left him with the grandparents, he could have even remarried of course

Do you think it is likely that Williams parents did die prematurely?

Hi Linda, the Metcalfes are sometimes spelt with out an e at the end Metcalfe/Metcalf.

I don't know whether this would help?

There are 300 Metcalfe burials in Ripon ranging from 1583 to 1900

Hi Linda, thanks for the igi information - but I have already got this and have managed to go back quite away on Mary Metcalfes line, as Mary's mother is living with them in 1841 - Jane umpleby.

it was William's parents who were and still are the puzzle.

I wonder if that 1847 Elizabeth could have been Bessy

In 1841 Sharow is in Ripon district 13A

It is a tiny place and there are only 5 pages on the census, but there is no one called Metcalfe there.
There is a joiner called Isaac Wood 60, with his wife Sarah 55 and a William 20, but no Betsy

I have checked the NBI discs for the deaths of his parents, but Sharow and Ripon are not covered

Phew, found him on the 1851 census, living with his Grandparents and uncle William.

This is so frustrating, I was so sure that I had found William, living with his grandparents on the 1851 census now I can not find it. I am now beginging to question everything about my research.

What I am sure about is that he was born in 1844 Ripon
