My 3xgreat grandfather was Walter Ebdon born 1856 @ Tipton St John, i have Walter's father as William Ebdon married to Harriet Clay.
In my tree William is born 1831 Durham, but i have had a message from some who is also researching the same tree saying that William's birth place is Coombe and father is John from the marriage cert that she has.
This person says that John was born abt. 1788 in Tipton and married to a Melony also born 1794 in Coombe (same as on the marriage cert)
She has also found a John Ebdon born abt 1788 married to an Ann Dyer.
Could someone please correct me if i have gone wrong

Hi Samantha, the only way to be sure is to get Walter's birth certificate. This will confirm his parents' names, and point you to the right William.

my advice! - double check all the paperwork you have - follow what this other person has - but beware!

I was told a whole load of tosh by someone reputed to be researching the same tree -

If its the Walter in Devon, then I think you have the correct info. It may be that the other person is actually NOT searching the same person. (Ebdon is a common name "up north" !)

I would get Walter's birth certificate to prove his father is Walterr and mother Harriet

We both have the same parents for Walter which is William Ebdon and Harriet Clay. Its more William thats the problem i have him born Durham and the other person has him born Coombe.

Hi Samantha, I agree with Jayne. Get Walter's birth certificate and confirm his parents and where he was born. Then compare to the 1861 and 1871 censuses. If you are sure you have the right Walter, then the censuses should confirm the birth locations for his parents. You may not be able to be 100% sure of William's parentage, given that he was born before BMD registration. Hey, it's your Tree and if you are comfortable with the research, then go with it.

Don't throw it all away yet. What you need to do is track back from what you know for certain and double check all the info you have. Could you ask the other person for a copy of the marriage cert and see if any of the other info fits (witnesses, addresses). Work slowly and double check everything.

In the 1841 census John and Millony have a daughter Sarah age 15yrs and then in the 1851 census they are seen as having a daughter Elizabeth age 16 yrs but neither are on the census together?
