I think that I'm on the right track but before I head off down it, I was wondering if there is an experienced kind soul out there who would double check!
I am trying to track down my grandmother's family.
She was Caroline Ann Gee born 11 Oct 1904.
Parents: Mary Worrall and father not on birth certificate.
I have a marriage certificate for William Gee and Mary Worrall dated 11th June 1906 so I'm guessing William Gee was her father.
The marriage certificate shows Robert Gee as William's father.
I have found the 1891 census for Nottingham, St Mary's Parish with a Robert Gee as head of the family and son William aged 20 and was wondering how to check if this is the right family.
I think Robert may have married in 1870...Nottingham 7b 443. Oct/Dec qtr.
Any help most appreciated.

Firstly - please give us ALL the information on the wedding cert - names, ages, occupations, addresses - witnesses etc.

Also ALL details from birth cert!

Every little detail has to be checked before we can work back with certainty!

Going back to Caroline's birth in 1904 I see she is registered WORRALL, ...perhaps the G is GEE.

Why did William, ...if he WAS the father, wait 20 months before he married Mary? Was he perhaps already married even though his marriage cert. refers to him as a bachelor?

Hi Ericthered
Many thanks for that, it confirms what I had on the Worrall side.
I'm trying to make an educated guess at the Robert Gee side of things and wondering if I have the right family on the 1891 census. I have them living at 5 Cavendish Street, Notts and he was born in Leicester. He is aged 38 in this census and has a son William aged 20 (plus another 7 children) and a wife called Ann.
I'm probably just being a numpty but I'm not sure how I can tell if it's the right Gee family.
Many thanks again

Hi Gwyn in Kent
On the copy of the birth certificate it shows her name as Caroline Ann Gee but I know she was registered as Worrall...had a devil of a time finding the birth certificate for her!
I'd like to find out why it took him so long to arrying her as well!

Hi ValT
Looks as though they were. I don't think they were family. They aren't names I have come across anywhere else.

I wonder if she was reregistered when the couple married.

I understand that with unmarried couples the father has to be present for his name to be included

The Robert Gee you found born in Leicester looks good with his occupation tying in with the marraige cert

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 11 Sep 2008 18:06

At that time, a child's surname was inferred not stated. ie. there was no actual box to fill in the surname as there is now.
The fact that Caroline had Gee included in her forenames does strongly suggest that that was her father's surname.
Have you looked for a previous marriage for him?
I have known of someone who had a sick wife in a hospital, had a child with someone else and who married after the wife eventually died.
He too was a ' bachelor ' at marriage.

Perhaps a Mrs GEE died between June 1904 and October 1906.?

That's good point Gwyn. I'll have a trawl through the death records. I hope he wasn't a bigamist!

Thanks K, looks as though I might have got the right family. I've got them on the 1891 census as well.

K

K Report 11 Sep 2008 18:27

Robert Gee was a framework knitter in 1901 and William had become a labourer in an Iron Foundary which would match the marriage cert.

Pamela

Pamela Report 11 Sep 2008 18:34

Hi K, they both match the marriage certificate of 1906 although William's occupation is just general labourer.

Hi Dea, it's great to have so many wonderful people to steer me in the right direction. I am really so grateful to them all. Now I just need to find out who the Caroline Worrall was who was present at the birth and registered it. I thought it was Mary's mother but according to the census her name was Sarah.
