Couldn't believe an email I received today(from another site) telling me off for looking up a request!!!!!
The moderator of the group had been very off putting to a member who only wanted three dob's for his step mother's family, saying it would take far too long to do a blanket search (on a name which isn't common!)so I took a quick look and found all three within 20 mins.Next thing I know I get a mail from the moderator telling me that it's not my family history and more or less to mind my own business : (
Also that no-one should do look ups as the person you are looking for might be a paid researcher ??????
I don't think I did anything wrong.
Just wanted to help as I have been helped in the past.
Any thoughts????

lets just say it was a yahoo group don't want to say which one....I've been told off enough for one day!

I think the 'moderator' needs to mind his/her own business.

Surely the function of a moderator is only to ensure that there are no unpleasant or offensive postings on a site........not to tell people what they should, or should not, look up!

Which site?

Quote from the email

The idea and principle behind doing look up as far as I am aware, is because
the person you are doing look ups for, is unable to carry out this function.
Regarding the harm you dont see in doing look ups, is that you could be
helping someone who is doing paid research, I also dont want to turn this
group into a free family history service. It is not easy to spot anyone who
could be doing this, but as the group owner I am responsible for the group
and the way I envisaged it should go.

Yahoo did not start **** or was it their idea, yahoo groups are started by
people like myself.

Not once did I mention Yahoo starting or coming up with the idea. And if you don't subscribe to a site isn't it a free family history service?if of course people are willing to transcribe records (which I have done) and share the information.
I think I'm missing something somewhere??????????

Samspade Report 12 Sep 2008 18:15

I would but at the moment he's the person with a lot of answers to my family history.Seems to like being in control of what people get and don't get! I haven't replied mainly cause I was far too cross.
Your mum had THREE maiden names???crikey I have trouble with just one!

Sam,

There is always one! One conjures up an image of him sitting in his dust ridden office, grimey computer screen, unwashed, unshaven and afraid to leave his screen incase he misses an opportunity to pounce!!

Please dont let it upset you, I agree with Eric he should keep his nose out, unless something unsavoury is being posted, so what if it is a researcher.......theres probably a few on this site!

another quote from the email

I started this group in 2001, because of the amount of information I had collected over the years in regards to the county of ****, I spent many thousands of hours researching at Record offices, libraries & local churches doing so, I have also spent many thousands of pounds as well. I have never asked anyone in the 20 years I have been researching my family history, to do anything I could not do myself, and that includes catching buses and sitting in the library & record offices, and also catching 3 buses to the LDS family history library on the outskirts of ***when it is open in the evening. I regard Family History as a personal and worthwhile pursuit.

The purpose of this group is to discuss family & local history in *****, and to help others who have not got the opportunity to visit and carry out local research, What this group is not about is a free service whilst you sit back in your armchair, and let others do the research for you.

Don't think he's sat in a dusty office LOL

I can't say which one he might kick me off!!!!!!!!!!
Next time I do a look up for some-one I have to remember to email them direct and NOT though the group ; )

Do they really think a paid researcher will scurry round looking for sites connected with family history for a free look up,,,,and take the risk of getting the wrong information,,,,,!!

Samspade

Samspade Report 12 Sep 2008 18:36

my thought's exactly! unless of course they are completely rubbish at their job.

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 12 Sep 2008 18:41

Yes Sam 3 !!!! and many lovely ladies and gents on here spent evenings and days looking for me ....and we would arrange a time to meet back here each day to try to sort it out .....and all that coz my best friend was in ICU ...but sadly died

we all got it sorted for FREE with not nastyness at all...........

stay with us ...we have good and bad days ....but we are cheap and info is free

What a bloody pompous selfish old trout!! Words fail me!

Are we supposed to feel sorry for him? I have been doing research for donkeys years .....for myself and other people and have no hesitation in sharing or helping anyone if I can.

Ann........hopping mad in North Wales!

Samspade

Samspade Report 12 Sep 2008 18:52

Oh Ann I think you've just summed him up! mind you some other words came to my mind ; )

Thank goodness it's not just me who finds his manner irritating!
I think i'll have to calm down abit and compose a 'nice' email back or then again maybe just consign him to my trash can??? can't decide which.

He obviously thinks he's the only person who has been researching for so long. A member of my family(very distant) is in her 90's and still going to the record office once a month travelling from the south coast to london on the train!

David, I think you might be right.

For those of us who are unable to undertake family research for ourselves because we either live too far away or have family health commitments, volunteer researchers such as those on here are an absolutely godsend. Where would we be without you? Indeed, the world would be a poorer place.
Methinks the gent in question lives a very sheltered life on Planet Zog! Perhaps he should come out of his little bubble and experience life as it is.
