Hmmn........
The Marriage Certificate of Francis Searle and Jane Millman shows Jane's Father as William Millman, so bang goes that theory I'm afraid. I will get the Certificate of Jane Dadd's Marriage if I can because my Sister is still convinced there's a connection ....perhaps Jane Millman's mother was called Dadd before marriage?
Gosh, they had such big families didn't they; no wonder it is so difficult to distinguish between them!

I think you may have hit upon the solution to the Jane Dadd mystery, Selena.
I have ordered a copy of the marriage certificate of Francis Searle and Jane Millman to confirm who Jane's father was.

Iv'e had a look and the only Richard and Jane I can find on the 1851 census is the pair of them born Barnstaple Devon but it has been transcribed as Barnstaple Middx!!!!!! They are in Wales and have a daughter Pellana born 1854 she was also born Barnstaple Devon. He was a Mariner so I suppose he could have died at sea. But I am not sure about this.

Will have another go in the morning as very tired now.

An 1851 census look up would be useful, unfortunately I don't have ancestry but if anyone could find Richard and Jane it might help confirm whether they did actually marry each other.

Getting the marriage certficiate to Francis in 1856 will confirm her father.

There is no marriage on FreeBMD for Jane Dadd to Francis Searle. It appears that Francis Seale married Jane MILMAN.

Could Richard have died? Then Francis was Jane's 2nd husband, and of course her name upon her 2nd marriage would then be Jane Milman which is why we can't find a Dadd/Searle marriage.

Thank you all for your help.
Selena and Melanie have the right match for my Great Grandmother. I knew she worked in a Mental Hospital at some time; the 1891 Census confirmed it.
I'm afraid I do not yet know the details of her marriage to Benjamin John Elston but it must have been either 1893 or 94 and was probably at Shobrook. Benjamin was 4 years her junior; he had a Steam Threshing and Sawing business. When they first married they lived at Sharpey (Sharphay ?) Farm, Shobrook; Emma's Mother Jane lived there with them.
Their children were
Ethel Joyce b 1895 later married to Alfred John Mildon.
Benjamin Searle b 1899
Gertrude Amy b c1901
Neither Benjamin nor Gertrude ever married.
I am relatively new to searching the archives so am not yet 'au fait' with locating Parish Records, Birth and Wedding Certificates etc..

I did not know that Jane Dadd's husband was called Francis but I do know for certain that she was the mother of my great grandmother - Emma Jane Elston (nee Searle.)
I am trying to find further 'Searle' and 'Dadd' relatives but am coming up against a blank wall when looking through official records ....... I also know that Emma Jane had siblings but have not discovered them either. When Emma Jane married she lived at Sharpy Farm, Shobrook; her mother lived there with them too. My Grandmother, Ethel Joyce Elston, Great Uncle, Benjamin Searle Elston and Great Aunt, Gertrude Amy Elston were born there too.
I would be very interested in any help you can give me as it sounds as though there is a connection with your relatives.
