At last I've discovered a male Pinfield - Henry Pinfield married Rebecca Day in 1821 in Huntingdonshire.

Yes, I'm backtracking using both Penfield and Pinfield. I keep finding mothers and grandmothers, but no fathers or grandfathers.

I have the feeling that Mr. Pilarski, if there was one, was just passing through, and happened to meet Emma Pinfield. I'll send for Antonia's birth cert. next to see if it says anything about the father, though I would have to take it with a pinch of salt anyway.

I wondered why my late husband used to tell such tall stories, obviously it was in his blood.

Would be nice to find a marriage for Emma to Mr Pilarski, wonder if his name was Leopold??

Thank you, Denise, I've sent a message and will wait impatiently for a reply.

Jim, I think all three you listed are correct. In the 1901 he's shown as Upholsterer, which was on his marriage cert. in August 1901.

He went on to become Manager in charge of timber production in Argentina for Maples, I've found records of him, his wife Amelia, and daughter Dorothy (my dreaded mother in law), travelling back and forth, first class. So from dubious beginnings he certainly made good.

Thanks to everyone for all your help, its certainly been a very interesting afternoon for me, I hope you all enjoyed it too.

Hi Jan,

The is a tree on Ancestry for Antonia, you would need to contact the owner though, because it's locked.

if his father was an actor - that could have been his latest role!

perhaps Arthur had a 'wicked' sense of humour!!!

On the whole, I don't find death certificates give very much new information, so only buy them as a last resort (penny pinching).

Now I'm trying to find Arthur L Hughes, born 1873 Marylebone, in the 1901.

In August 1901 he married, gave his occupation as Upholsterer, which I assume was the start of his employment with Maples of London. He also gave his father's occupation as Secretary to the Maharajah of Madras, I wonder if that was just a tarradiddle?

Thanks for that, Denise - I can see that this is going to keep me very busy for quite a while sorting it all out.

I've just found a George and Antonia Power in the 1901, in lodgings in Liverpool with a Benjamin (relation to Head - brother). Looks as if they get younger every 10 years. I can't quite read their occupations, because its overwritten, but could easily be Actor. Could anyone have a look for me? Their dates of birth this time are 1860 for George and 1862 for Antonia. Not bad for a birth registered in 1854.

The mother Fannie is a teacher of dancing, looks like George had the actor/dancing in his blood.

Looks like someone else is tracing this line with the correction made.

sounds more like it Jan

my gt grandmother was married to someone else when she had my granddad

but she put herself down on the cert as being married to his father - but we know she never was!!

Christine

Janet

Janet Report 6 Nov 2008 15:29

Christine, my starting point on this is the birth certificate of Arthur Leopold Hughes, 1873, which gives his parents as Arthur Alfred Hughes and Antonia formerly Pilarski.

I can't find a record of a Hughes/Pilarski marriage, so perhaps they weren't. So Arthur L is her son, but not George Powers'.

Jan,
Just noticed that!

All the census returns must be for the Antonia you are searching also birth for her and marriage to George.
