Find Ancestors

I'm trying to sort out a father and son both named John Burridge.

John senior was born in Whitehaven in 1815 but appears to have shaved about 10 years off his age in 1881. His first wife was Ann Sharp and they married in 1842 in Wigton, Cumberland. Ann died in 1870 in Whitehaven. I think John moved to Liverpool some time after this and took up with Elizabeth? I don't believe they married. John's father William also moved to Liverpool to be with his son.

John junior was born in Hensingham, Cumberland in 1847. He married Hannah/Ann Cowx in 1873. They had 2 sons, James 1874 and Robert 1876. Hannah died in 1879 giving birth to a daughter, Ann Sharp Burridge.

I'd be extremely greatful for any census information.

There are loads of John H's listed with mother Elizabeth though.

I do suspect that he was a stepson so that might explain things. Can you see if you can find John with his first wife Ann Sharp? They should be in Whitehaven, possibly St Bees or Egremont.

I see what you mean. What I can't understand is why this John ended up with William living with him in 1871. William is definately mine!

William Burridge was married to Abigail and they had a daughter Mary who married my 4xg/grandfather Robert Sharp. Robert's sister Ann Sharp married Mary's brother John in 1842. (Yes, I know. 2 siblings marrying 2 siblings. Does wonders for the tree).

Ann Burridge nee Sharp didn't die until 1870 so she should appear in 1861 with husband John. They must be two different John's.


Aha! Thanks for that. You were one step ahead of me! The 51 census is my family. There's Johnathan junior with them. But he's also got a younger brother called John!


It seems the family had a habit of doubling up on forenames. I wonder if the 2 John's (John and Ann and John and Catherine/Elizabeth were brothers?
