Find Ancestors

If you read through from the begining of this thread you will see it seems to be infringment of copyright which is the problem-eg copy and paste from Ancestry or such like.which are subscription sites.

I do not think there is a problem with refering people to sites

On rather more sophisticated forums like, for example, RootsChat and FTF, it is possible to include copyright information in your signature - not here, though.

This does seem to be an attempt at 'cover all' wording. In one of the paragraphs, it makes mention of not linking to third party sites. The context is in terms of spamming or advertising but, technically by the nature of the wording, it could also apply to me suggesting researchers look at a particular site for specialist information - incidentally, not supplied on this site or Ancestry - such as TNA or Cyndislist.

Moderation of the boards would, of course, prevent any breaches before they happened and remove these worries and doubts.

I think what David is saying is correct, GR know that the look ups and help given on here is the mainstay of this site - it would be dead without it. (Check out michelle's post above - GR delete a look up thread but tell her its ok to start another)

However they are obviously getting a bit nervous about being held to task by companies such as ancestry and are covering their own butts.

Personally I do feel the blatant "look up" threads really are a bit OTT, Im am always amazed ancestry hasnt come down on GR like a ton of hot bricks.

I do agree with David.I have had 2 threads deleted and after my 1st was deleted Genes said to me to start another 1!If i had been doing anything awful they wouldn't have said that surely?I think as David said they are just covering themselves.

The main point of these boards is to do lookups for people whether it is on a lookup thread or just helping individuals.They know we are copying and pasting,typing the info would take ages!If they had a problem with this they would be punishing people who do this.

Also think Ancestry needs to get on with sorting the tech problems out with the site at the moment rather than worrying about copying and pasting!!

When you are in Ancestry - looking at a census image - there is an option to send the page to a friend. So what's that about then?

Admittedly it only lets you send 5 or 6 pages to the same e-mail address but it lets you send them!!

I think there's something about copyright laws where you can copy a percentage of the work - like a few quotes from a book - without have to apply for permission. It's only if you want to use a larger percentage that you begin to infringe the copyright laws.

So the odd look up here and there is probably not an issue but regular lookups would be?

I wouldn't say we're panicing David, however i persoanlly have had 3 threads offering help deleted by the powers that be.....

...and the same experience as others, they say nothing..... it wouldn;t be so bad if you had warning what you were doing was wrong, but no they just whooooosh it!!!!

Even if Ancestry had boards like on GR it would make a huge difference as well. Have you ever tried to use their message Boards? They are very difficult to work around. I do not even bother to try any more.

Has this been put on "trying to find"board as well because not everyone looks on this board,so i think it might be a good idea to pass it round a bit more

The way I read it is that we can still put up the information for people ...... just don't c&p the record in its entirety from ancestry, or any other site which demands a subscription

As freebmd is a FREE site, and so is familysearch, then there surely can be no copyright protectection ....... in any case I usually tell people where I have found that free information, and direct them how to use it themselves.



I think it just means ....... be a bit careful!!!

Its very time consuming though to type all the details down. Which means less help to those who need it.

To be honest, Im surprised its taken this long for ancestry to put their foot down. They have known about this for a long time and Id assumed that they probably read the threads and felt that they were getting a lot of subs through recommendations. But as we know, they changed hands a year or so back so may be thats why everything is tightening up. You cant really blame them. If you were offering a service and found people passing on the info you sold for free youd be miffed.

We can still give say, give the family group names though, without all the other reference materials and of course if someone else has a sub and are merely asking for clarification on something then that must be ok too.

Er Hello GR.....!!!!! we`re all in a quandry here........please enlighten...... A sticky thread at the top of each board should suffice.

It's all to do with copyright law. You can copy. Sometimes only with the express permission of the copyright holder. Other times you are allowed to copy only a portion and then acknowledge the copyright holder. The same would be true of looking up any information from discs you may have purchased from any Family History Societies covering Parish Records for Births, Deaths and Marriages. They too often have an agreement which you must accept when you run up the disc.

If you give the details of where information can be found i.e. reference numbers etc. then I don't believe this infringes copyright, otherwise a library list of books could be considered as an infringement of authors work.

There must be someone on this board who is a librarian or who is in a job and know the rules and regulations that could be put into plain words for us.

But there seems to be panic setting in on this thread. The copyright law is been infringed every hour of the day and little is done about it, so don't worry.

Just remember how many members have been grateful for your help and advice in getting just that little bit further in their research !!

I am confused by this?I have had my lookup thread deleted twice before and if it was for the reason of copying and pasting records and i was breaking rules then why did Genes tell me to start another 1 up and give me no punishment?
I should imagine that Genes have added this to the T and C to cover themselves if any problems occur from other sites.If they had a problem with people doing copying and pasting they would not allow members who have been found to be doing this do lookups again or would at least punish them?
Society all way round doesn't seem to like people helping other's does it!
