If he is that 1841 Henry Clayton, he could be this one in the IGI:

HENRY CLAYTON
Christening: 25 JUL 1779 Aberford, Yorkshire, England
Father: WILLIAM CLAYTON
Mother: ANN
Source Information:
Batch No.: P007341

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 19 Nov 2008 03:59

This is a submitted (unverified!) record in the IGI:

WILLIAM CLAYTON
Spouse: ANN CLARKSON
Marriage: 09 NOV 1778 Aberford, Yorkshire, England

You could be on to something, EvieBeavie - there is this record on the National Archives catalogue for a chelsea pensioner:

WO Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies
Division within WO Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals
WO 97 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents
Subseries within WO 97 1760-1854: discharge papers arranged by regiment, but each described at item level. (WO 97/1-1271)
WO 97/162 Foot Guards: Clar - Col

Record Summary
Scope and content HENRY CLAYTON
Born NOTTINGLAY, Yorkshire
Served in 1st Foot Guards
Discharged aged 35
Covering dates 1803-1814

... the covering dates are the years that he served, so if discharged at aged 35 in 1814 then he was born c1779 which ties in with the christening you found in Aberford. I can't find a place in Yorkshire called "Nottinglay", but presumably it could be Knottingley, which is less than 10 miles from Aberford.

Could "ESERTOT" be a *really* bad transcription for CLARKSON, perhaps?

By the way, Geordie - if you decide that this is the right Henry, you can order a copy of his service records from the National Archives.

Well me too!

I wasn't really onto anything. I would have clicked on by ... Scotland, hmm ... except for Sylvia.

Sylvia started it, mummy!

And I think both Sylvia and I should think about the Archives occasionally. I was just messing around there this very afternoon ...

Anyhow, really bad transcription of Clarkson was all I could think of!

Well done!

As a matter of fact ... I just went there, and found in the Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals a fellow who I am pretty sure will be my father's father's father's mother's father ...

Thank you ever so much for inadavertently telling me that!

Heh, Sylvia. When I said "I just went there", I meant the website, lol.

Right after reading this thread, I went to the site and found, I think, my 3xgrandfather being discharged from the army in 1821.

Even the ever-bored other household occupant was impressed by that. He started to glaze over as usual, and then said Wow, that's almost 200 years ago! Then I told him about the parish records back to 1550 for one of my other lines. I think it was the details from 1821 that impressed him though -- an ancestor who would likely have been in the Napoleonic Wars -- just like Geordie's. That's something to notice.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Nov 2008 01:19

it certainly was something to notice!

glad OH was impressed.

I just get told how badly I am mispronouncing welsh words!!!

Geordie - out of interest, could you have another look at the mother's maiden surname on his death cert - the one that you first thought looked like ESERTOT. I'm curious to know whether you think now that it could be CLARKSON, given the above info!

cheers,
Richard

Me too.

Syvia three, I'm sure!

Do you have any way of scanning it and uploading it somewhere we could look at it, or emailing a copy?

If you got it at ScotlandsPeople, I imagine you can save the image as a file and you could email it (we can give you email addresses by private message).

I'm often pretty good at deciphering things, for one.
