You can acquire a lot of family history on this site but there is nothing more frustrating for willing helpers than to have little or no response to their results.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 2 Jan 2009 19:44

Especially when, because of inadequate / inaccurate information in the request, the willing helpers inadvertently go off on tangents and goose chases in their efforts to help ...

Stick around, answer questions / acknowledge efforts promptly!

yes you can get a lot of information on this site sometimes to much to assimilate, please try and take a little bit at a time buy the relevant certificates check the evidence and then come back to the post

i am still waiting for replies to a couple of posts so i can help further.
in the end you just give up and move on to help the next person.
which is annoying i will not go back to posts that do not answer.

time is precious

Hi
I am new to these threads and I can relate to what you are saying and I am not going to defend anyone but the norm is stated "don't leave your post " ?? there seems to be a small flaw in that when some one on the other side of the world ask a question and that there is a massive TIME difference so me seems to think that when an answer is evident one is asleep until one logs on again.

The time that are on all these threads is where in the UK?

reaction !!!

begaar

The request for people to stay by their pc's after asking for help refers only to a short period of time.

If you take the trouble to look round the boards, you will see that most feedback is within a matter of minutes........sometimes even seconds.

It makes sense to post a request for help at a time when you can spare -say ten minutes - to wait for reaction, whether it be the info you seek, or perhaps a question about the posting, asking for clarification.

So many people who ask for others to help them don't give enough detail, or perhaps don't make their request as clear as it might be....................

If they don't wait for feedback...........they are the losers, as those who give help will simply move on, and help another person

FannyByGaslight Report 3 Jan 2009 11:42

Also
The time difference does not really come into it as the"helpers"live all over the world so someone is always awake.

Whoa
I real struck a nerve there
Calling them "losers'" is a bit rich I would say lack of patience
this is a friendly site so having people doing look ups for others is nothing short of be dedicated to what one does.
I am a volunteer in the tourism industry and I love my work whether it be a good day or bad and I too are in contact with people contantly asking stupid questions but being a professional at what I am doing does not give me the right to call them "losers".

Vivienne Yep you are right so to speak your time at my end was 11.42 am?? and it is 10.53pm my end.

Ericthered Report 3 Jan 2009 12:44

You have managed to completely misunderstand my point....whether deliberately so, or not, I do not know.

Saying that they were "the losers" merely meant that they were losing out on getting info. I did NOT say they were "losers"....try reading the posting again!

Perhaps your antipodean understanding of our language is somewhat different from mine.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 3 Jan 2009 13:01

exactly - losers in the sense that they never get the information they wanted or needed - their loss!!! It is a friendly site Wayne and hopefully it will stay friendly.

The key word in Eric's posting was "the" - the losers, not just losers!!!

Ann

Wow this is even better

"your antipodean understanding of our language is somewhat different from mine"

Definition:
of Australia and New Zealand: coming from or relating to Australia or New Zealand

now that is rich

Loser which one do you mean?

Definition:

1. somebody who has not won: a person or team that has failed to win a specific contest

2. somebody put at disadvantage: a person or thing adversely affected by a situation or course of action
If this measure goes through, the real losers will be college-leavers.

3. somebody unsuccessful or unlucky: an unsuccessful or unlucky person who seems destined to fail repeatedly ( informal insult )

4. social misfit: a socially maladjusted person ( informal insult )
