I do wish Genes would put some very basic guidelines re

How to find your thread ......
and
Stay by your computer for replies......

at the top of each board. :

This would then save folk like Alan, Heather, Sue etc. putting up their own helpful threads which disappear quickly down the boards and need to be constantly nudged up for effect.

Does anyone know why they don't do this?

could I also state, if you are not already aware of the fact - Eric is an absolute stalwart on these research boards and has a knack of finding information that very often other people can't - I am not defending him here by the way, he is more than able to do that for himself and in my opinion already has done so

AnnCardiff Report 3 Jan 2009 13:06

Wayne - you are taking offfence when none was made - please just let it go - it could well be a misunderstanding on your part, but I and others completely understand where Eric is coming from even if you apparently don't. This is a nice site and a well intended thread - if you donlt like it, move on to another one

I agree with Eric - Wayne has completely misunderstood the use of the word "Losers".

Anyone who doesn't come back to the thread within a reasonable amount of time will "lose out" because helpers will just move on to help someone else.

When posting a request for information, it IS much better to hang around for 15 minutes or so to see if anyone responds - HOWEVER , if for any reason you can't then it is much better to say so. Just say you will be back to the thread later, or tomorrow or next week etc. At least that way those trying to help will realise there is no point in asking you questions that you are not around to answer.

Wow this is even better

"your antipodean understanding of our language is somewhat different from mine"

Definition:
of Australia and New Zealand: coming from or relating to Australia or New Zealand

now that is rich

Loser which one do you mean?

Definition:

1. somebody who has not won: a person or team that has failed to win a specific contest

2. somebody put at disadvantage: a person or thing adversely affected by a situation or course of action
If this measure goes through, the real losers will be college-leavers.

3. somebody unsuccessful or unlucky: an unsuccessful or unlucky person who seems destined to fail repeatedly ( informal insult )

4. social misfit: a socially maladjusted person ( informal insult )

exactly - losers in the sense that they never get the information they wanted or needed - their loss!!! It is a friendly site Wayne and hopefully it will stay friendly.

The key word in Eric's posting was "the" - the losers, not just losers!!!

You have managed to completely misunderstand my point....whether deliberately so, or not, I do not know.

Saying that they were "the losers" merely meant that they were losing out on getting info. I did NOT say they were "losers"....try reading the posting again!

Perhaps your antipodean understanding of our language is somewhat different from mine.

bega Report 3 Jan 2009 12:31

Whoa
I real struck a nerve there
Calling them "losers'" is a bit rich I would say lack of patience
this is a friendly site so having people doing look ups for others is nothing short of be dedicated to what one does.
I am a volunteer in the tourism industry and I love my work whether it be a good day or bad and I too are in contact with people contantly asking stupid questions but being a professional at what I am doing does not give me the right to call them "losers".

Vivienne Yep you are right so to speak your time at my end was 11.42 am?? and it is 10.53pm my end.

Also
The time difference does not really come into it as the"helpers"live all over the world so someone is always awake.

begaar

The request for people to stay by their pc's after asking for help refers only to a short period of time.

If you take the trouble to look round the boards, you will see that most feedback is within a matter of minutes........sometimes even seconds.

It makes sense to post a request for help at a time when you can spare -say ten minutes - to wait for reaction, whether it be the info you seek, or perhaps a question about the posting, asking for clarification.

So many people who ask for others to help them don't give enough detail, or perhaps don't make their request as clear as it might be....................

If they don't wait for feedback...........they are the losers, as those who give help will simply move on, and help another person

Hi
I am new to these threads and I can relate to what you are saying and I am not going to defend anyone but the norm is stated "don't leave your post " ?? there seems to be a small flaw in that when some one on the other side of the world ask a question and that there is a massive TIME difference so me seems to think that when an answer is evident one is asleep until one logs on again.

The time that are on all these threads is where in the UK?

reaction !!!

they certainly dont ann!
but it seems to be gone so i cant look
i think a crystal ball and mind reading would be helpful sometimes
but a lot of the time it is because people dont know how to get back to their threads
i had to be told how at the start on here
