Just a bit of extra info.

If you want to view John stevenson Allinson ( spelt stevenson ) service records on the N.A.A....( National Archives of Australia )

20 pages.
To read/view the actual "Digital" copy of Service records, which hold a reasonable ammount of info.( Think it gives his mothers address back in Yorkshire )
Also you can save/print each page to your computer.

Cherilyn Report 12 Jan 2009 02:43

Hi Maggy, Suzanne & Tony

I have been reading along with interest, quite a curious one!

I've also noticed that Rose was a little older than John (abt 9 yrs!) and that it was her 2nd marriage.

This is her birth:

Surname: WALTERS
Given Names: Rose Elizabeth
Event: B
Father: Jas Webby [also shown as Welby on sibs regs]
Mother: Margaret STANLEY
Birth Place: EAGLEHAWK
Year: 1877
Reg Number: 15087

She was first married to Wm DOWSEY in 1898 (reg 1782) and they had 3 children in Eaglehawk. Possible death for Wm aged 31 in 1907 in Bendigo. This may explain why, when her details were added to John's enlistment papers as next of kin, she is shown as 'widow'. As she was about 41 when she married John it seems unlikley they had any children (can't see any in the index to 1920 anyway).

:-)

And just to add.... Rose Elizabeth ALLINSON is buried at Tongala Cem. 5th Sept 1940.

also
John ALLINSON and Rose owned and ran a Cafe in Tongala in the early 1930s.....too.
Tongala is country Victoria......up near the boarder of Victoria & N.S.W between Shepparton and Echuca.

Thanks Tony, again for finding me the burial of Rose too.

I had already found all the army information thanks. I typed his name into my search and it threw all that at me!! That's what started my search into the Australian side of the family.

Thanks for showing an interest Cherilyn and for the marriage information. I wondered if she had been married before because the information that I had so far showed two different surnames for her. Thanks for sorting that one out for me.

My next job now is to find out for certain whether his mother went to Australia with him. She is named on his death records as Elizabeth Tate, but her last known name, to me, was Elizabeth Wood, but her mother's name was Tate? Wonder if she remarried too, or did she just change her name because as far as I know she was still married in England to George Wood? How complicated.

To sum it all up, my great grandmother Elizabeth Allinson, married George Wood in Pontefract in 1892. She already had 2 children, John Stephenson Allinson, and Albert Stephenson Allinson (my granddad). She never married their father and he was never named on either of their birth certificates, but I assume his name was Stephenson. (on Johns' marriage certificate his father was named as John Stephenson, a soldier, but I took that with a pinch of salt, maybe it was true?)

George Wood, so I have been told, remarried in 1911 in Bridlington, Yorkshire. And Elizabeth is named on her son's death as Elizabeth Tate.

Meanwhile John Stephenson Allinson married Mabel Healey in Altofts, Yorkshire in 1912. I found what I thought were their children born from 1913/1925, but in the meantime he joins the Australian army and gets married again in Australia, where he dies in 1936.

Do you ever wish that you had never started doing your family tree??

Another update!

I've just managed to sneak a look at the 1911 census. My great grandmother was still living with her husband, George Wood in 1911, so it seems like the person who told me that he remarried in 1911 maybe got it wrong!!

Back to the drawing board on that one! Just shows that you can't always believe what you are told.

Just another little nudge for this one, hoping that someone else might be able to add to it!!
