Found the birth of your Jessie Maud 1909.Romford
Found the marriage of her parents
William Crosby and Maud Elizabeth Tyler 1900 Romford
Found Jessie in the 1911 census with her parents and sibling
William Henry transcribbed as CROSSBY 1880 living Romford.
Maud Elizabeth 1882
William Henry 1903
John Richard 1905
Albert M 1907

After the 1911 census there is a Margaretta May Crosby (Mothers maiden name Tyler) born 02.11.1911 who married John H.M.Fisher 1930 - she died 1992 at Barking, Essex and she is in the tree of a member of GR.
Good luck I do hope your friend Penny gets a good lead on her birth family. Regards Irene

Hi Rose there is a message on the Success board about a lady getting in touch with Barnardos about her Dad and she found out a lot of information about him and they sent her 2 pictures to - one when her father was 5 and one when he was 15. You could get in touch with that lady and find out how much information was on the admission form. Good luck Irene

Hi Smiley, Sorry just seen your message. Penny has a marriage certificate which is the only one that could be found in Dec 1929,
states their ages as 20.

Hi Sue, Have had a long chat with Penny. She has no memory of her father. Her Nan showed her a photo of a man holding a baby in a shawl and was told that was her father.

She was sent to Barnardos very young, has no memory of her mother,
after being in foster homes she eventually went to live with her maternal grandmother when she was 5 or 6.
She now recalls that she went to live with B J known as Jack when she was about 10 on the Thames View Estate Barking but then went to boarding school at 12 as she didnt get on with Jacks wife!!
Brother Roger apparently visited Jacks home but they used to argue
constantly and he was always told to leave!

Penny was told by her Nan that she had 5 brothers but never met 2 of them. She said she had met brother Alfred when she was living with her Nan at Movers Lane Barking.

When Penny queried why she was born in Bath her Nan told her all mothers with children or expectant mums were evacuated.

It seems very strange that her mothers death record cannot be found
nor can we find this elusive brother Alfred!

They havent got far on freebmd for me to find Horace George Day's death records cos he must have died not long after Penny was born.

I am hoping that the marriage certificate is her parents as she feels it is.
Not the easiest find, I am hoping that Penny will contact Barnardos as Irene suggested as it might give a clue as to when her mother died.
Maybe they will also know something about her siblings, if Roger was born 1937 he wouldnt have been old enough to be living on his own,
where did he go?

She said her head was getting all fuzzy trying to remember but Ive told her to take her time and anything that she remembers she should write it down.

If there is anything that you can take from this new info to help further I would be so grateful for your help.

Many many thanks Rose

How about ordering the marriage cert? Hopefully that will give you ages, another little bit of info under your belt.

Hi Debdob, How fascinating, yes there can be confusion over names as we know when trying to trace back and someone changed their christian name, if they only knew all the trouble they cause us!
My fiance was known as John to all my family, their faces were a picture apparently when the rector said do thee Albert take..... His father was also Albert, known as Bert, they decided to use his middle name so it would be less confusing!!!

I'll put these theorys to Penny, let her mull them over, certainly something for her to think about.

Thank you very very much Rose

Hi Irene, Yes it is sad that Penny has got to 64 and is now looking for her parents, my fault Im afraid cos I love searching for my family and offered to help as much as I could.
Penny mentioned brothers Alfred, John and Roger and there could have been 5 children in the family. You found a Brian 1930 and with Penny herself that makes 5! Will pass on your advice to contact Barnardos.
Maybe she didnt have brothers Alfred and John, she only has a birth certificate and memories from her Nan which over the years can distort.
Very strange that a death cannot be found for Jessie Maud Day. gosh I hope her Nan didnt cover the truth.

Hi Sue, You may have found Roger, this is great.

I will pass all this info to Penny so that she can decide what to do next.

Thank you everyone you have been most helpful, wouldnt know what to do without you.

im wondering if Brian J Day was a Brian John Day hence your friend remembering a John and with Suzanne finding Roger A Day i wonder if this could be Roger Alfred Day hence the Aldred. Do you think there could be a little confusion over the names?

Hi
I've searched birth records from 1933-1946
Roger A Day.mmn: Crosby. pob: Romford. Jan-Mar qtr. 1937. vol 4a page 806.
Nothing then until Penelope in 1944. After that ,just to confuse matters, there were 2 births in 1946. Rose M A Day.mmn: Crosby. pob: Cleveland, Jan-Mar qtr.1946 Vol.9d page 688. There is either a correction to that registration or a 2nd birth of a Rosemary A Day.mmn Crosby. pob: Cleveland Jan-Mar qtr. 1946. vol 9d page16. This 2nd entry is handwritten at the bottom of page.
Hope this helps
Sue

Rose I think your friend needs to get in touch with Barnardos at Ilford and ask for a copy of her admission form. I got a copy of my grandfathers and it was very detailed and gave all the information on his parents and siblings and why he was admitted.
I have searched again for the death of Jessie and could not find it.
I found a marriage 3rd quarter 1945 after your friend was born of Jessie M Day and Francis A J Vincent and thought that was why I could not find her at her death but looked through again for Jessie Vincent and could not find her death.
The siblings of your friend I found Brian J Day mothers maiden name Crosby 1930 then searched right through to the end of 1933 and found no more children yet. It takes a long time as there are 4 quarters each year and Day is a common name so have to search 2 whole pages each quarter.
I think it is terrible your friend has got to 60+ and does not know her roots. Barnardos I am sure can help.
Perhaps a copy of the birth certificate of Brian J Day will help a little.
Good luck - perhaps some of the night people can seach 1933 - 1944 for you.

Hi Irene, Just spoke to Penny she is quite sure she was only about 2 when her mother died. She was born Aug 1944 so the death of her mother could be late 1945 till 1947?
She went to Barnardos Barkingside but I dont know at what age.

She thinks there could have been 5 children in the family. Surprised only 1 birth has shown as she was the last to be born!

Thank you Rose

Yes Mel I realize it was the wrong details. If the death was found then the Mum's age would show and then we would know when she was born. Irene

Is this the birth you found ?

Day Brian J Crosby Romford 4a 887

this may be to the Jessie Maud born 1906 Romford, could they have come from Romford not Barking ?

Debdob

Debdob Report 14 Jan 2009 16:38

the romford connection looks promising. i'd be inclined to send for Brian J Day's birth cert to see who his parents were. I know £7 maybe expensive but it wouold give a lead.

Irene

Irene Report 14 Jan 2009 16:35
