Oh what a wonderful result on the prison entry. So who was the ann she assaulted, cant go all the way through the notes - was it a sister or mum or what?

Yes both convictions are for her, it says a later conviction ref.

She sounds a bit fiery doesnt she ?

For info, Francis was fostered in ther 1901 and the 20 year old in the house is also a laundress, so may be known to Mary.

forgot to say earlier, you'll not get a reply from Gateshead too quickly as they only read emails in the mornings. What comes in during the rest of the day is left unread until the next morning, so if you emailed today they won't read it until Monday.

Thanks for your enquiry. You have directed it to the right place but I'm not sure how much we can do to help at this stage.
You can see brief details of records we hold for orphanages and children's homes in the User Guide http://www.tyneandweararchives.org.uk/pdf/userguide22.pdf on our website, but without knowing where Francis Melody was placed the search is potentially long and with no guarantee of success. There were a number of other orphanages for which we have no records.
I wonder if the best approach would be to wait for the release of the 1911 census for Northumberland, which is scheduled to be some time this year (the southern part of the country has already been released - see http://www.1911census.co.uk/ for more information). This would hopefully enable you to locate Francis Melody in the orphanage.
If you do want to visit to see any of the records we have you would be most welcome to do so. Please see ourwebsite for more information on making a visit.
We also offer a paid research service, and again details are on the website.
not sure how to proceed

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be guessing around until you get her birth certificate!

That will give her mother's name, and that's what's essential to make any positive identification of the parents' marriage and to find them in the 1901 and so on.

Two Thomas Drummonds married in Gateshead 1900-1909 (both in 1900). One married a Mary Ann Harrison. My money might be on that one. But close doesn't count in this game. ;) If we extend the marriage search back to 1885, there's another Thomas in 1891, and one in 1899. And that's just in Gateshead, which I'm only guessing.

Get the birth certificate and then it will be a piece of cake to find the marriage, and possibly even to find them in 1901 and beyond.

Do you know anything about Mary Ann Drummond's siblings?

Drummond-Harrison births in Gateshead (there aren't any other relevant ones) after mid-1911 are George, Sep 1911, and Ellen, Sep 1913.

If you do know of any other siblings born after mid-1911, the GRO entry would give the mother's surname.

For all Drummond births in Gateshead 1911-1920, there are dozens of mothers' surnames involved.

Now, if her father was Joseph Drummond (there were five of them married in Gateshead 1889-1909, one possibly to a Mary Ann) ... or neither Thomas nor Joseph ...

Wait for the birth cert. ;)

Another avenue to follow for Francis......have you looked for a baptism...in jail or at nearest church? I found my grandfather and his mothe being baptised together at the church affiliated to the workhouse.

Maureen

The Mellody name is a rare name in Ireland with only a few hundred individuals mainly in Co Galway

My mother was a Mellody and I would be interested in finding out more about what you have been able to get about your aunt's family

Hi Martin

This is a very old thread and the chances of Maureen seeing your post is slim but not impossible.

It would be far more productive to send her a personal message that way you can monitor if she reads it in sent messages. Also GR will send a message to the email address that they have on file whereas she will not receive notification that there has been a reply on this thread.

Good luck with your research :-)
