They don't have any further information about John's parents.

Whew, glad you're still here, Alviegal. I had a misunderstanding with a friend on the internet when I first bought my computer. Ever since, I'm paranoid that I might say the wrong thing. Hence, all of the :) in my posts. Besides, you're a great help living in Scotland. :)))

Hi Ladies,
Let's put our heads together on this one - the said John born 1889 can't really be confirmed as being Malcolm and Elizabeth' son as I see it.
They were born, lived and died in Scotland and the info given said John was born in Soctland or Canada and that he immigrated in 1860. I am really confused - surely there must be another John somewhere - it doesn't all tie up!!

oops

I hadn't seent hat Lisa had already found this.

I was looking to see if I could find them on the 1880 Census on familysearch, and didn't return here before going onto ancestry!

There was incidentally nothing for John McFiggins (soundex on) on the 1880 USA, nor in Canada or the UK

Ladies
Do I read this right that Malcolm had 2 wives and that both were Scottish but they married in Canada - please correct me if I am wrong.
J

Here is more info I have
Malcolm Mcfiggins 1778-1856 married Elizabeth Moodie 1777-1852
They have 8 children all born in Scotland
Elizabeth 1802-1866
Janet 1803-1869
Adam 1805-1869
John 1809
Christina 1811
Alison 1813-1878
Margaret 1816-1901
Malcolm 1821

As you can see Malcolm ties in nicely but John's DOB is way out
There must be another explanation for this- maybe another leg of the family-cousin??
Although your info did say there was a John - could it have been an Adam John born 1805 - just grasping at straws now and making it up but things do get mistranscribed don't

Hi Jane. This Malcolm must be the brother of the original John b 1850 that we started looking for. They have the same parents but I can find no census records for him at all. And yes, he does appear to have married twice , both times to ladies born in Scotland.

I'm afraid I must disappear now...it's getting late over here but will see tomorrow if you other ladies have found anothing else. Nighty night!

This "In Memorium" in the Rochester New York Democrat and Chronicle, Thursday, Feb. 18, 1918:

MCFIGGINS:
In loving memory of John D. McFiggins who passed away on the 14th. day of February, 1917.

alviegal Report 16 Feb 2009 23:04

I'm back for a moment because I've just thought of something pretty obvious. If Malcolm and Elizabeth were married in 1800, surely they wouldn't have had a son born in 1850. A grandson perhaps but not a son.

Liz
I have been sitting here trying to work all this out. I now think that John isn't Malcolm and Elizabeth son - as you say sums don't work out. He must be from the next generation down and possibly on another branch of tree.

Liz I have just found a fundamental error in the tree I recieved from my distance relative in America - she has John D Mcfiggins list in her 3rd and 4th generation- obvoiusly it should be in the 4th. Seems like I or we have been on a wild goose chase. I am thinking maybe Fred is a son and not a nephew but not sure.
Thanking you again for all your efforts on my behalf you information has been invaluable

Sorry, Jane, I made a typo on that "In Memorium" that I posted, The year of death was 1917 not 1916. I have gone back and corrected it.
It was from this site which is Northern New York newspapers. I'm looking for the death in 1917 but can't see it.
