If the ages of Betty and Isabel are about the same re the census I think that they are both the same person. I don't know about in the UK but here Elizabeth is known as Isabel and Elizabeth is known in England as Betty.

Sorry if this isn't very clear.

And do you know about naming patterns. Look it up on the web.

Thats why we get all their children calling their children the same names which confuses us all!!!!!!!

I agree with Wendy. In Scotland Isabel is interchangeable with Elizabeth and Betty is a pet form of Elizabeth. I know Lancs is nowhere near Scotland but maybe something like that happened.

Here is a piece about the naming patterns I was talking about.

From the begining of the 18th Century to the end of the 19th Century, the naming convention for children
born to English-speaking families often followed a basic pattern.
Although the naming convention does not always follow this order, many children'as given names
originated from their ancestors. For example - the first son was usually named after the father's father.
Below is the commonly accepted pattern:

The first son was named after the father's father.

Second son was named after the mother's father.

Third son was named after the father.

Fourth son was named after the father's oldest brother.

Fifth son was named after the father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother.

First daughter was named after the mother's mother.

Second daughter was named after the father's mother.

Third daughter was named after the mother.

Fourth daughter was named after the mother's oldest sister.

Fifth daughter is named after the mother's 2nd oldest sister or the father's oldest sister.
