A lot if libraries, colleges and universities now subscribe to the Gale group, but if you go to the shire of which you are researching they have extra repositories which might come in useful .I am a member of Lancashire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and several London libraries although I live in Derbyshire.

Sorry Quoy, I wasn't meaning that you were copying Jonesey, just mean to say that IF it's the same collection, MINE is still working (as is Ann's!).

yes but I posted it at the beginning of 2009 and Jonsey reposted it at the end of 2009. It was originally found by Samspade

Am I being daft? Isn't this the same 19th C collection that is mentioned on Jonesey's thread? Mine is still working fine.

I got the newspaper account of my great grandfather's death and inquest this morning. Two full columns long ..................... and it seems there was some mis-communication between police forces and coroners (yes, multiple!).

The family story had been a little embellished.

No child was involved!!

It seems that James was in a carriage with 3 other men, asked if the train stopped at the station coming up. Someone said yes. James stood up, put his hand on the door closest to him, it opened and he fell out! It was the door to the outside of the carriage, ie not the one that would be at the platform, and he probably hit his head on the railway line.

The coroner ruled an accident, saying the door was obviously not fastened properly, but he had no evidence that that it was deliberate. He thought that a civil case against the railway company might stand a chance but .........

I did find a name that I didn't have before. One of the men in the carriage and who gave evidence at the inquest said he was James' nephew .......... now I've got to find how he fits in!

Thanks again Quoy for the lead

Just to report that I got an email from an Assistant at the Oldham Local Archives Centre today

She ahd found the full report of the inquest on my great grandfather in one of the newspapers in their collection.

She will send a copy of the article to me if I send her my postal address (which I have done!!)

Isn't that fantastic???

What is even better ........... there is no charge for the service!!!!

Thank you Quoy for the idea of trying county libraries, even though Oldham wasn't in the Lancashire system!!

thanks so much for that info and all the info on the Moyles. Unfortunately I live in South Africa at the moment, the closest library to me is a flight away! I shall try and find out if there are any online libraries to join perhaps that might help me look up all this info. I am really excited that there is so much info my Moyle family. Thanks again.
Jackie.
