I have just found the burial record for "Harriet Maude Ritchie beloved wife of Herbert Pickering" at the Methodist Church, Verdun, Montreal. Date of death 1 April 1913, burial 4 April. Date of birth given as 31 July 1881 but the GRO Index and the 1911 Canadian census confirm this should be 1882.

My wife and I are researching her Pickering family, grandfather Arthur Pickering, and have just come across this thread. Herbert Pickering was her grandfather's brother who, we believe, married Harriet Maude Ritchie in 1907. They appear to have emigrated to Canada immediately after the marriage on the "Virginian" sailing from Liverpool on 2 March 1907 and landing in Halifax Nova Scotia on 10 March. Their final destination was declared as Montreal. They were travelling as a married couple named Herbert and Maud Pickering. They are together as husband and wife in the 1911 Canadian census at 103a Rue Galt, Verdun, Montreal. The entry confirms their dates of birth in England and the date they entered Canada as immigrants. They are shown in the census as Canadian Nationals.

"Family legend" says that Herbert Pickering left home and disappeared for some time before they received a postcard from him living in Canada. Herbert is in the 1901 UK census but is not in the 1911 UK census. While there are many Herbert Pickerings who sailed to Canada between 1901 and 1911, there is only 1 other Herbert Pickering in the entire 1911 Canadian census, living in Trafalgar, Ontario aged 22 and with his parents and many siblings so this is not "our Herbert". We have just sent for the marriage certificate of Herbert and "Hettie".

Apologies firstly. I couldn't come on line this morning as have had grandchildren for a sleepover, then a visit from an electrician for a job that wants doing before I have my new cooker installed.

Pippilongstockings, the A.J Shelton you found is a possibility,as, although gt.gt.aunt was from Cambs.in the 1901 census she is working in a confectionery shop in Nottingham.
EvieBeavie,also good for the Alice Jane White you found also.
In answer to you two questions, I think the names would have been their birth names or she would have put MRS in front. An example I managed to find myself was a brother and sister, then a MRS against another name. I thought this was another sister, until I found a census, and saw that the mother had the same christian name as a daughter. So she was sending cards to the brother, sister, and their mother.Hope this is not too confusing an explanation.
In answer to your second question, and I hope it makes sense,is that, from the entire list, not just the part that I have put on here, I have managed to match up several brothers and sisters,and sisters and sisters, ie Lilian and Nellie Coates. The William's surname may or may not be related. I just wish there had been an address book available to match the birthday book.

Can you or your cousin tell from other entries for people you are familiar with whether your gr-gr-aunt ordinarily entered married women's birthdays using their birth surnames or married surnames?

I would tend to think birth, since they were probably mostly people she knew all her life. Unless maybe she knew them as "wife of".

And another. This could get complicated, but you're the one asking. ;)

Do any of the surnames in your list belong to any other people in her book?

For instance, if there are other Whites and you know who they are, we might be able to deduce who the AJ is.

So there I was trying to find Harriet Pickering (Herbert) or Harriet Lawrence (George), from the 1907 marriage, in the 1911 ... and of course East Yorkshire isn't there yet ...

There are no Pickering-Ritchie births at FreeBMD, and the Lawrence-Ritchie births start in 1919 so likely aren't that Harriet's.

The problem with the women in the list of course is that we can't know whether the surnames are birth surnames or husbands' surnames!

You're right, people could have come from anywhere, or not lived where your gr-gr-aunt did but been related by marriage, etc. ............

EvieBeavie, though you thought the Hettie Ritchie you found was abit out of area so to speak, we should not forget that our ancestors did move around abit. Some became boarders (for whatever reasons), governesses, pupil teachers etc. Gt. gt. Aunty worked in a confectionery shop and lived in three more areas after her birth area.
