Hi Marilyn here, I did what you suggested and purchased a birth certificate for Richard W Stubbles the brother of Florence . The mother's maiden name was Kerlery, and the address was the same, as was the father's name and profession.
I also purchased the marriage certificate of Rchard and Elizabeth. It has her father as John Kerley. Richard is a bachelor and Elizabeth a spinster, so neither were married before and his profession is the same on all three certificates.
Thank you all for helping me sort this out. I wrote to my cousin sending her copies of the certificates and am waiting a reply.

Belatedly rejoining the party - thanks for the PM, Christine. I'll reproduce it below in case it contains anything new and different.

As you see, I traced Elizabeth Kerley back to 1841 (Richochet has now repeated that 1841 census info) and beyond, to her birth (from the IGI).

She matches your Elizabeth "Shorley" in absolutely every respect. The match really is too close to be coincidence.

You need:

- the Stubbles-Kerley marriage certificate, to check that the father of Elizabeth matches the father of Elizabeth Kerley as seen in the censuses and the IGI

- a birth certificate of one of the other Stubbles children to see what the mother's surname is

If you are able to scan the birth certificate you have, where you think the name reads "Shorley", any of us would be happy to look at it if you wanted to email it.

It's always possible the name was just entered incorrectly on the birth certificate, and if the parties were illiterate they would not have known. Checking a sibling's certificate seems wise.

Come on back when you have that info!

----------------------------------------

Hi Evie,Thankyou to you and everyone who has been working on this query for me. I'm sorry I didn't stay on line but living in Australia poses a bit of a time difference. The 1901 census was correct as Florence Jones 27yrs was married to Walter and their child is listed as Florence 5 months, she was my grandmother. Her address on her marriage certificate was 1Laura Place and her fathers name was Richard Stubbles. I guess I need to look for Richard W Stubbles birth notice to see if his mother's maiden name is listed.

My cousin in England has been researching the family tree and she sent me a lot of marriage and birth certificates so this is all I have to go on.
It did cross my mind that it may have been a misprint on Elizabeth birth certificate but if you say you have a copy you will see that it is quite clearly an "S". I did at one time think it could have been a "T" but after checking out the handwritting chart on Ancestery it is deffinatly an "S".
Thankyou for finding the marriage info for Richard W Stubbles and Ada Storey I wasn't sure if they had married. I have found birth records of their sons Alfred and George.

I also found 2 entries of death for Richard Stubbles one vol 6 pg 284 Wokingham and vol 1a pg 308 St.George hanover Square both for 188. I am not sure which is correct.

[Wokingham is entirely the wrong area, I think - EB]

I would love it if you could keep in touch as I am fairly new to this, thankyou again Marilyn.
From Marilyn

Marilyn
I have now proved you have the wrong birth certificate. I have given you the marriage of Ernest and Florence and the marriage of Florence and Walter. Florence is with her mother in 1901 who is Elizabeth Kerley born Durweston .
You have been given all of the census details and you have been shown why it is not Shorley.

If this is the same Florence we should find a 1901 census and a death for Walter.

You are encountering a problem so I suggest you retrace your steps. You say your grandparents were Ernest Dice and Florence Stubbles. I could not find this marriage. Was Florence previously married?

Thankyou every one and i'm sorry for not answering straight away, I am new to this and living in Australia there is a bit of a time difference.
I I do have the birth certificate of Florence Stubbles born 8/5/1873, it shows her father as Richard Stubbles, Railway Porter and her mother as Elizabeth Stubbles formally Shorley. The address is 14 Windsor Street, Paddington.Florence married Walter Jones on the 10/10/1897. They in turn had 6 children, Walter, Florence, Lilian, Richard, Frank.and Maud. Florence married Ernest Dice on 18/11/1924. They are my grandparents. I have worked backward form the information that I have. It really is a puzzle but I will do as you suggesrt and get hold of a birth certificate of one of Elizabeth's siblings to compare the mother's maiden name. I will get back to you on that.

EvieBeavie Report 6 Mar 2009 10:15

That's where we came in, Heather. ;)

"My great grandmother Florence Stubbles married Walter Jones on 10/10/1897 Kensington, London, wittnesses were George Stubbles and Richard W. Stubbles and Ada Storey. This Richard was my greatgrandmother's brother. On her birth certit 8/5/1873 it states that her father was Richard Stubbles, Railway Porter, and her mother Elizabeth formally Shorley."

Marilyn said she was sure of the spelling of the surname. That's why I'd suggest getting another child's birth cert, to compare.

We all went following Marilyn down the red herring trail:

"I also have Elizabeth's birth certificate stating that she was born 9/8/1848, her mother Eliza formally Copperwheat."
