Find Ancestors

Had a look at the family tree on Ancestry that Rootsgatherer mentioned:

They have actually put the death certificate for Helen Mair on the record.

Details:

Death: 17th January 1898 at 10.25am
Helen Mair age 42yrs
Woodilee Asylum Lenzie
Father: ---- Daily (Carter)
Mother: Helen Daily (ms Lochrey)
Both deceased
Cause of death: Pernicious Anaemia Indefinite
Informant: Attendant

The question now is ... If Helen Mair died in January 1898 and the certificate says her mother is deceased at this point, the Helen Lochrie mentioned in the 1898 death on Scotlandspeople would need to have died before the 17th January of the same year.

Failing that, it looks as if she possibly died between the last sighting of her in 1881 and the 1891 census.

Thanks Helen.I've had a look at the death cert.for Helen Lochrie 1898 on SP. It was for a child 11 months old the illegitimate daughter of charles Cole and Catherine Lochrie.It was worth a shot though. I've tried to find a 2nd marriage for Helen without any luck.She remains a bit of a mystery.
The info about helen Mair's death cert. was great. I've tried so many times to find it and I've now got it printed off thanks to you.I'll keep trying for helen lochrie now there's another spelling variation!! Will keep you posted Regards Margaret

Eureka !!! I've found her. I can't believe I missed it before I thought I had tried every combination.. Was at mitchell this morning and had another look at poor laws and thereshe was.She applied on 11/4/1879 age 56,widowed and living in Bedford St with her 2 sons- daughter helen married and living wth Alex. mair and 2 children at 10 Swan St
She was the daughter of Peter Lochrie (carter) and helen Dougan both deceased. born at bedford lane No date given.She was R.C.so that's probably why we couldn't find any record.
I didn't have a lot of time as I had an appointment but will check again for anythig else when I go back to collect the copies.Thanks again for all your help and support Margaret

This is going off at a tangent here and is a bit of along shot but I noticed in the Mair info you gave me that my grandfather Alxander Mair's1/2 brother died in Busby(near Eaglesham). I was born and brought up in Eaglesham where there was a large family of Mairs.They always felt there was a connection between our families but never could work out where (no GR in those days!). I wondered if the ancestry tree you used showed any connection with the Eaglesham Mairs.If possible I would love to know if they were right and where the connection is.margaret

This is where the Poor Law records come into their own. If it wasn't for these records, all that valuable information would be lost. Well done Glasgow for preserving such a rich collection from the past.

Surely those of us who come from humble backgrounds must be the envy of those more affluent in regards to gaining info from Poor records I have had heaps of data from the poor law and know the thrill of finding my ancestors stories there ... sad for them but lucky of us.

Not sure how RC records work, but there may be a way of tracing Helen's baptism. As the family appear to have always lived in the Gorbals area you might be able to find records for the local church of that time. Ask at the Mitchell, they might be able to advise you.

That's an interesting story about the Eaglesham connection. I think it must have been Rootsgatherer who passed that info on. I'll leave it to him to check up on that for you.

Hi Linda thanks again for coming to my aid. My grandfather did appear to lose touch with his father but I'm not sure when.On his poor relief application in 1915 it shows the death of his mother in woodilee and that whereabouts of his father were unknown. heard many years ago that there had been some sort of split in the family but no-one knew who why or when (typical family legend).This must have been it.maybe the 2nd wife was on the scene before Helen died.....probably I'll never know.
I can match nearly all the Mairs on the list you gave me (including my own mother!) So am assuming that the others are some I haven' t come accross yet. I will check them out.It was just a long shot that henry would be the "missing link" to the Eaglesham Mairs speculation.have had a go on ancestrylibrary at the mitchell but find it very difficult to navigate- but hopefully practice will make perfect !! The tree on Ancestry belongs to someone called 'Ann Marie' Mair. Through her husband's family.

If you go to 'search trees' on Genes, and enter Helen Lochrie's name, you will find a tree belonging to 'Ann Marie'

Probably the same person and might be worth contacting if you want to take the connection further.

rootgatherer I,m not sure where Swan St was but I do have some Mairs north of the river including Port Dundas so it could well be the one you know of.
Thanks to you both for all your hard work,help and advice.You've been wonderful. I'm now going to spend time consolidating my info and filing gaps before moving on.Having only recently discovered the poor law records and realising how great they are I think I'll need to take my bed to the Mitchell as I have rather a lot of Mairs on my Tree!!! Also need to get a grasp of ancestry!
