That is indeed an object to envy, Sonya.

I gather there's a document in the Devon archives attesting to a lease of mining rights on land in Cornwall to a grx2 grfather of mine and his business partner. He evidently prospered, whatever stock he came from; haven't quite figured that out yet.

When he remarried in 1875, he called his father a "Gentleman" on his marriage certificate. (His father was most likely dead for decades, actually.)

However, in his brother's 1823 baptism, their father is identifed as an Ag Lab. ;)

John Chadwick in 1881, I would imagine:

Name: John Chadwick
Age: 52
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Relation: Head
Where born: Manchester, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Withington
County/Island: Lancashire
Street address: Heaton Rd Shaw Holme
Condition as to marriage: Married
>> Occupation: Mechanical Engineer (Employing 50 Men) (E & M)

and possibly his son:

Name: John Chadwick

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Elizabeth
Where born: Oldham, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Oldham
County/Island: Lancashire
Street address: Greaves St
Condition as to marriage: Married
>> Occupation: Manager Gas Works Gas Engineer

(In 1861 he has a son aged 9, younger than this one.)

Had hoped he might be the sort who had the apprentice in the household, in 1861, but it seems the operation was bigger than that.

I've found out where John Parkinson Green died - Bakewell, Derbyshire, in 1927. His wife Mary Ann died in 1917 and is buried in Stretford Cemetery, Trafford. It looks as if following her death he moved to Bakewell to be cared for by his eldest daughter Edith, my grandmother (I was born and bred in Bakewell.)

I knew he had lived there at some point but I couldn't work out when, so the pieces of the jigsaw have slotted together nicely. Both he and my grandfather died before I was born, but their memory lived on in the form of big, framed photos of both of them in their Masonic regalia. It used to spook me out as a child to have these stern-looking men glaring at me from the sitting room walls!

Um ... any feelings about that John Wright Parkinson?

I'll bet you posted again before refreshing the thread. ;)

Thanks Janey. :)

I'll bet this is John Wright Parkinson's mother in 1841.

Name: Dorothy Parkinson
Age: 55
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1786
not born in county

Civil Parish: Manchester
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Manchester

Dorothy Parkinson 55 - Housekeeper
Mary Parkinson 20

Housekeeper would likely just mean she was a widowed woman head of household.

Ah yes; in the household are:

John Calvert 50 - independent means
Alice Calvert 45
Jane Calvert 40

So she's living with siblings.

This places that John Wright Parkinson's family in Manchester ...

If we go with the notion that John Wright Parkinson was a man of means, this appeared in the London Gazette on 16th October 1914.

That ties in with the 1881 census which has Lymm as his residence.

I have also found a reference to a John Wright Parkinson being appointed Relieving Officer.

Public Record(s)

I know it's a long time since I posted this thread, but I thought those who so kindly helped me would like to know the latest development.

I have just found some proof of the link between John Parkinson Green and his father John Wright Parkinson.

I discovered an old pocket book used by JPG when he was an apprentice, and leafing through it, amongst all the scientific and mathematical jottings, I found various dates and family information inserted in odd spaces here and there.

Lo and behold -

John Wright Parkinson
Whitefield
Lymm
Born ctober 4th 1813
Died June 6th 1885

So JPG has spoken from beyond and confirmed the link!

JaneyCanuck Report 9 May 2010 21:27

Glad to have the update - skimming through the thread and trying to recall this one, it seems you now have the info and the artefact to confirm it!

But you're still missing John Parkinson Green's birth? But since you have:

"This afternoon, I discovered an old brown document that turned out to be his indentures to engineer John chadwick of Manchester from Aug 27th 1861 to July 31st 1867.
Thanks to this, I now know the name of JPG's mother - Eliza Green of 2b Howard Street, Bery New Road, Manchester. Presumably that would be Bury New Road."

it seems likely to be the baptism I added before, I guess:

JOHN GREEN
Christening: 13 JAN 1847 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Mother: ELIZA GREEN
Batch No.: C073542

Congratulations!

Sonya

Sonya Report 14 May 2010 13:05

Thanks Janey.

I did find the baptism details a while back. I think by now I know more about JPG than anyone else on my family tree! His pocket book is a fascinating insight into the sort of man he was - very learned and knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, he didn't record any details of his mother Eliza Green, and I have hit a brick wall trying to find her. There are no census records for that area of Manchester because they were damaged by floods. There are so many Greens with some variant spelling of Elizabeth, that without some clue as to where she was born, it's a needle in a haystack situation.

I know they were still in that area in 1870 because I have John Parkinson Green's confirmation certificate. He was confirmed at Radcliffe Parish Church on 30th November 1870 and took his first communion at Stand Lane Church (that would be the old Stand Lane Church, not the one that's there now). JPG's address on his marriage certificate is given as Charlestown, and subsequent Censuses (1881, 1891, 1901) place him at Strawberry Hill, Pendleton.

I've done a fair bit of research on his father, John Wright Parkinson. He didn't marry until 1868, some 22 years after his son JPG was born, and he had no children by his wife Ann Stott/Mason. I have sent off for a copy of his will to see if either JPG or Eliza Green are mentioned in it., in the hope that it will give me some clues about Eliza. I'm not holding my breath, though, because he had nephews and nieces who would have a claim on his estate. The money seems to have come from his mother's side, the Calverts.

I'll post another update if I find anything.

this any help?

from manchester 1851 unfilmed census

1 Front Windsor PIRKIN Ann
1 Front Windsor GREEN Eliza
1 Front Windsor GREEN John

Regent Rd Salford

unfortunately those are the only details given but the site seems to indicate that the image can be viewed on fmp

Sonya

Sonya Report 14 May 2010 17:31

That looks very promising indeed, Ann, thank you!

Where did you get that from? Can you give me a link? I didn't know you could view the unfilmed census.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 14 May 2010 23:39

http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/

the site can be searched by name only but the results when clicked on the ref give the whole page of address & names

I may have read it wrong but it seems to say if you have a sub to FMP you can see the image

Sonya

Sonya Report 15 May 2010 23:38

Thanks for the link. I'll get some more credits and have a look.

It's interesting that the head of household is Ann Pirkin. There is a record on IGI of an Ann Green marrying Richard Pirkin in Manchester Cathedral on 05 Jan 1831. Could this be Eliza's sister, I wonder?

It's certainly given me another avenue to explore. I appreciate your help very much.

Sonya

Sonya Report 16 May 2010 00:53

Sadly, this avenue turned out to be a dead end.

Ann Perkin, Eliza Green and John Green appear again on the 1861 Census, still living at 1 Windsor Road. Ann Pirkin is the Aunt and John and Eliza are her nephew and niece, with only a couple of years between their ages, so they are obviously not the mother and son I am looking for.

On with the search!

Without your help I would never have known about the unfilmed census, and I am sure it will be very useful, so thank you again.

JaneyCanuck Report 16 May 2010 01:29

Just adding this because I think we had JWP's mother in 1851 but not him.

Name: Jno Wright Parkinson
Age: 37
Estimated birth year: abt 1814
Relation: Nephew
Where born: Aukland Bishop, Durham, England

Civil parish: Hulme
Ecclesiastical parish: St George
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Decayed

Alice Calvert 57 - proprietress of houses
Jane Calvert 55 - proprietress of houses
Jno Wright Parkinson 37 - carrier's clerk
Annie McAlli 21 - servant

You thought his money came from his mother's Calvert side - perhaps the houses of which he was later proprietor came from the aunts. ;)
