I'm looking for information on 3 of 4 Lee daughters.

Parents - Frederick Lee and Elsie Grace (nee Lovelock)
Fred was a Londoner - no other info on him. Elsie was born in Chisbury,Wilts c 1889. They were married in 1909 in Pewsey,Wilts and lived in Andover until their deaths in the mid 50's - no death details
They had 4 daughters - Marjorie Ivy,Alice,Lily E and Mary

Marjorie is the eldest b 3 april 1913. She had 3 children - a girl then twins boy and girl b 1939 out of wedlock then married George Alexanderin the 50's. Marj is now 96 yrs old but cant remember her sisters.

Alice - had a daughter May Gwendoline in May 1929 who was adopted by Fred and Elsie.Nothing else known about Alice except she moved to paddington,London

Lily E - born in 1917 in Pewsey,Wilts Marj doesn't remember her so maybe she died as a baby.

Mary - Middle name possibly Gwendoline. The youngest by several years she was only 2 or 3 years older than May (really her neice) and they grew up as sisters. She married a man in the 50's called Broom from Southhampton but its thought she still lived in Andover. She had children- at least 1 was a boy and we think she got divorced.

Only the eldest Marjorie and the 3rd daughter lily are recorded as daughters of Frederick and Elsie Lee which is a bit of a mystery I've even tried different birth dates and various name combinations but cant find Alice or Mary.
May is 80 yrs old and would love to find out what happened to her mother and what happened to Mary who she talks about constantly -remembering growing up together as sisters.

If anyone can help it would be fantastic

Rosie

Mary G Lee is shown in the GRO index as having surname Grace, which Ancestry has transcribed as Gracs. You can find the birth record at FreeBMD with mother Grace - obviously an error in reading the mother's name when it was transferred into the GRO index.

Yeeessss, Julie. ;)

The closest match in the post-1984 deaths index is:

Name: Mary Grace Broom
Birth Date: 9 Jul 1927
Death Registration Month/Year: Mar 1990
Age at death (estimated): 62
Registration district: Bristol
Inferred County: Gloucestershire
Volume: 22
Page: 473

but the birthdate is slightly off for a registration in sep-dec quarter. Birthdates do sometimes get fuzzy over time.

Rosie has PMed thanks for the births info -- you're welcome! -- do post in the thread too, Rosie - click on the purple Reply button up top and a box will open.

What I can't find is a birth for Elsie Grace Lovelock.

Was wondering whether it was a first married surname, and that messed up the children's birth registrations.

Rosie, can you say where the info about Elsie's birth came from?

There is this one:

Births Dec 1889
Lovelock Elsie Hungerford 2c 257

1901:

Name: Elsie Lovelock
Age: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: George
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: Chisbury, Wiltshire, England

Civil Parish: Alton Priors
Registration district: Pewsey

If Alice had a daughter in 1929 & Marjorie is the eldest then Alice would have been quite young when she had her

So what about this birth

Births Sep 1909 (>99%)
LEE Agnes Alice A Pewsey 5a 139

Aha. Just as I suspected!

Marriages Sep 1890
Grace Sarah Ann Hungerford 2c 441
LOVELOCK George Hungerford 2c 441

Was Grace Elsie's middle name, or birth surname??

1901 household - George is a good deal younger than Sarah:

George Lovelock 34
Sarah Lovelock 42
Henry Hall Lovelock 14
-- EDIT -- it says Henry GRACE Lovelock (i.e. his birth surname was likely Grace)
Elsie Lovelock 11
Lily Lovelock 9
Charles Lovelock 8
Walter Lovelock 6
Frances Lovelock 4 months

None of which is finding living rellies immediately, but it sometimes helps!

Births Dec 1889
Grace Elsie Hungerford 2c 260

I think that's Elsie Grace Lovelock.

Possibly registered under both names? They were registered the same quarter in the same place.

I thought the same - Alice would have been extremely young. So maybe she wasn't the second-eldest, Rosie?

Julie

Julie Report 24 May 2009 22:42

I also find it odd that they married in 1909 but 1st child born 4 years later

And they sound like with those surnames to be Gypies

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 24 May 2009 22:42

Or what about

Births Jun 1911
Lee Alice M Tisbury 5a 179

? Pewsey does seem the better bet.

Rosie, you need that 1909 marriage certificate to get ages and fathers' names -- to find Frederick in 1901 and 1911 -- to see whether Alice is with them.
