Ricochet, i love you! But how on earth did you know that Povey would be transcribed as CONEY and Driver would be transcribed as DEINER!!! Lots of the info matches, so think this is the one. But what chance do us amateurs have of ever knowing what the surnames could be changed to with bad writing or mis-hearing because of accents etc. I am so grateful to people like you who help us on our way. Thanks again. Linda

You'd better put this down to Ricochet's expertise! He seems to be a dab hand at finding the unfindable :)

This family certainly got around didn't they?

I'm so pleased that part of your puzzle has been sorted.

I just put in the forenames of the Jobs (father and son).............then trawled for a likely match.

Glad to help......any time.

Hi everyone, thanks to Cynthia's help i think i am going to pursue the idea that the wife's residence at the time of marriage reads as Hindly Green, near Wigan. The husband's residence is shown as Ashton and they were in fact married in his parish at the Parish Church in the Parish of Christ Church, Ashton, Lancaster in August 1863 by LICENCE rather than BANNS. Reading previous threads on Banns this would seem to indicate maybe a hurried wedding if bride pregnant? Or just down to the fact they were widow and widower? Any other ideas on why use husbands parish instead of wife's would be appreciated.

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 24 Jul 2009 15:38

Could be a number of reasons I guess.

Although it is more common for couples to be married in the bride's church it doesn't always have to be the case. They can be married in either. We were married in my husband's parish church.

Perhaps that is where Job and Harriet were going to live?

Convenience maybe?

Even because it was a prettier church, which has been known!!

I have emailed a contact and am waiting for a reply re HIndley Green church.

Re: Reading previous threads on Banns this would seem to indicate maybe a hurried wedding if bride pregnant?

I don't quite follow this - 9 months is 9 months.

A licence normally takes 15 d to get, same time as calling a set of banns.

Ah well, that certainly helps. Well done mgnv. All Saints is the oldest church in Hindley and Hindley Green would have come under its boundaries.

They didn't leave much time between Daniel dying and the marriage to Job did they? This could be why it didn't take place in Hindley - because of what people may say. (pure speculation you understand.)

this site gives a good explanation of banns v licence

http://www.lichfield.anglican.org/chadnet/DynamicContent/Documents/marriage_com_lic.pdf

gives a possible reason as having to prove death of a previous spouse

My impression was that the usual location for a marr was really the bride's parents' parish, rather than the bride's. Of course, mostly there was no difference. However, for a 40+ yo widow, I wouldn't think her parents were so relevant, especially if they were dead - which I don't know here - and convenience would be much more likely to outweigh tradition (whatever that was).

Linda Report 25 Jul 2009 14:52

Thanks for finding the burial in March 1863 mgnv. And you're right Harriet was a fast worker to bury one husband in March and marry another in August... however in those days widows had no pension or income so i guess finding another husband seemed a matter or urgency!!

But i think your right Cynthia, people would no doubt talk so maybe thats the reason for choosing the bridegroom's parish.

Think what it's going to be like in the future now that the banns system has altered - they can marry virtually where they like. All the pretty village churches will benefit - whilst the plainer ones will miss out.

As for the weddings in hot air balloons, on beaches, mountains, caves.......going to be fun for the genealogists of the future!!
