People may not have known where they were born. They may have moved at a very young age to an area and assumed that they were born there. I've come across a few instances of this happening. Talk about wild goose chases!! When you do eventually track them down as a child with their family they are usually living in the area where they think they were born but the place of birth is miles away!!

I gave in and paid for the original image of the 1911 census for Lena and surprise surprise it shows me absolutely nothing, other than Alice is listed as a widow therefore presuming George had died.
The 'how many years married' not completed, the howmany children in present marriage , not completed. Children born still living = 2, children died not completed

Lena is listed as being born London on the 1911 census but no district or further info supplied

Could this be Emma's death?

1911 census has Lena born in London. You might want to look at the image.

She probably did not know that she was not a Ratcliff/e and there was not official adoption then. She married in the name that she was known by.

ceri Report 8 Aug 2009 00:02

guess what guys i think i can confirm that George and Emma is my George!!!

In 1901 George and Alice were living at 251 Elgin Avenue, Paddington
In 1891 George and Emma were living at 49 Elgin Terrace?, Paddinton
In 1901 Emma and the children were living at 120 Elgin Avenue, Paddington
coincedence dont you think?

So how would i go about finding name change/adoption etc records?

ceri

ceri Report 7 Aug 2009 23:43

I think this is her death
Death reg 1st Qtr 1980
Lena Harrington in Watford, vol 10, page 0960 dob shown as 26/4/1891

So that would fit with the birth you found, after speaking to my aunt she said it was her that registered Lena's death, she was only young at the time and didnt know, and didnt know what she was doing either!

GlitterBaby Report 7 Aug 2009 23:40

Rule out the Lena C Davis one as she is on 1901 census with mother.

ceri Report 7 Aug 2009 23:38

ceri

ceri Report 7 Aug 2009 23:35

She doesnt have a middle name on her marriage certificate and didnt as far as we are aware but thats the best match found so far!!

ceri

ceri Report 7 Aug 2009 23:34

Well it does happen even in these days....
My own birth certificate is a family lie...the father on my birth certificate is not my biological father and this WAS known about at the time of my birth god help the people that research my family history in 100 years time!! hahaha

It was done to keep the rest of the family quiet!!

Then my own daughters birth certificate has no father listed instead says father unknown...it is known but i didnt want him listed didnt want him to have that privileidge!

ceri Report 7 Aug 2009 23:31

So would you say its very likely that that is THE George in question in 1891 with Emma?
The occupations are the same/similar i guess?

GlitterBaby Report 7 Aug 2009 23:30

My great grandmother lied on the 1901 and 1911 census about being married - she actually married in 1914 - to the man she was with on those census.. Also lied on my grandmothers birth cert.
