from that marriage record it does look like Mary was born 1868/69. I wonder if she lied about her father and she was actually illegitimate.

Will look at marriage of Adam & Mary Cowell in 1868 (St John's Preston) to see what his occupation was next time I go to LRO.

There was no baptism of a Mary Stevenson c1868 at St John's but did not look for a Mary Cowell to see if she was born before the marriage.

Did find this eath though on freebmd which might fit

marriage of Adam to Mary Cowell

Adam a 25 Engineer of Fox St father Daniel - contractor

Mary Cowell a 22 of Lower Pitt St father John (can't read occupation)

witnesses George Cowell & ? Dewhirst

difficult to reconcile Adam an engineer with Adam a pawnbroker!
