I am searching for ancestors with the name Goodship, who seem to have originated in Wiltshire.
My G Grandfather was William Goodship bn 1852 Calne, Wiltshire. In 1892 at Bethnal Green, he married Clara Jane Millie of Cripplegate bn 1856.
Goodship is my mother's maiden name and appears to be an old Saxon name.
I am very interested to trace the ancestry of the Goodship families and to understand how long they were in that area. They were believed to be 'farmers'.

Yes this is the correct William Goodship. His son William Robert, my Grandfather was born to Clara Jane Goodship (nee Millie) in Camberwell in 1896, then I know that they had moved to Bury St Edmunds by 1901. William senior died in 1908 there.
I would like to trace the family back into Wiltshire.

Thank you again Ozibird. That looks good, but I just don't know about the correct Mary or otherwise. I had marked down snippets over the years and I have two names. One is Mary Godwin or Goodwin... and the other is Mary Austin, but strangely I don't know how I got that information. Its part of the sort out I want to do!
I'll obtain the birth certificate as you suggest and see what it can confirm.
