in reply to you Pm to me

The details of Fulham reg district prior to 1875 are as previously posted here.

regarding names
people often changed their names , used thier middle names etc

you also mentioned that Patrick's mother may have been Bridget O'Reilly

Yes that is him; he moved to Edmonton.
Yes, that John Boling, I'm going to request the birth cert. But how do I prove they are one and the same if there is no mention of Patrick or Bowling on it?
Thanks, I'll try those web links.

For us to be able to help you you need to help us

You only have him saying he was born in Fulham from the 1911 & that the 1891 & 1901 says he was born in Middlesex

I post a 1891 census info asking you if this is the right one
I then asked you to post some census info as that one on 1891 is the only one i could see

Audrey

Audrey Report 12 Oct 2009 20:30

1911 and 1891 info has been posted and are correct, I thought I said that (sorry, having problems posting things this site keeps kicking me out). I'm sure I had the 1901 info, but I can't find it. They had at this time 4 children all born in Edmonton (probably Enfield) - Thomas, John, Kathleen (known as Kate), Ann ( known as Nance). Their marriage certificate says he was living at 8 Jubilee terrace and she at 2 cumberloand road on 5 October 1890. He was 22 and a gardener, she was 20 and had no occupation, his father was James Bowling a labourer and her father was Thomas Hummerstone a labourer ( I know enough about him). By 1910 they were living at 41 Allens Road, Ponders End, Enfield, Middx.

re the BOLING birth

The index may have been mistranscribed and when you see the original it may well say BOWLING

it should also have his father's name on and occupation and hopefully it will say James!

it also might give his middle name and it just wasn't put on the index.

Thanks all for your help so far. I have now received the birth certificate for John Boling, details as follows:
When and Where: 1 May 1868 Union Workhouse, Fulham
Name: John
Father: James Boling
Mother: Bridget Boling formerly Maroney
Occupation of Father: Gas Factory Labourer
Registered in Kensington

The only things that are the same as my Patrick are the year (1868) and the first name of the father. I need more convincing that this is the same one. Any suggestions welcome.

we need to find them on 1871 census, no luck so far

Audrey

Audrey Report 19 Nov 2009 12:46

They have been found on the 1901 census under the surname Harding! Along with their cousin Arthur Smith (21).

I have found what I think may be my grandfather under the name Patrick Bowlan. It would appear he is the older brother of John Boling as their parents are the same (James Bowlan and Bridget Bowlan formerly Maroney) apart from the spelling of the surname. The birth date is 6 April 1867 in William Street (there is no number), Fulham, which is the mother's address. The father was a Gas factory labourer, but they had not at that stage moved to the Union Workhouse, which is where John was born on 1 May 1868.

I would be grateful for any help finding them on the 1871 census (and Patrick on 1881 census as only John was shown with Bridget as a widow) and ideas on how to find James bowlan/boling further back. In the 1881 census Bridget is down as being born in Ireland. I don't know anything about James.

I have found a reason why they may have been under Harding in 1901. Bridget married William Harding on 7 July 1878 at St Peter's Church, Hammersmith.

What has now flummoxed me is that she is then shown as Bridget Bowling in the 1881 census. I have tried to find out what happened to William Harding, but can't seem to find anything about this. Help appreciated.

If she went back to using Bowling, why would Patrick suddenly use Harding 20 years later and be Bowling after?
