Do you think this might be her?

Births Dec 1850
Brown Louisa Elizabeth Hannah Bermondsey 4 11

Closest Louisa Elizabeth Brown in the index.

If the father's name/occupation matched the marriage certificate, it would give you her mother's name and maybe a better chance of finding her in earlier censuses (esp. if the mother was widowed early, e.g., or perhaps remarried).

Hmm, this looks like that Louisa in 1851 in Bermondsey:

John Brown 24 - guard, Brighton railway
Louisa Brown 25
John Brown 2
Louisa Eh Brown 6 Mo
Sarah Lee Derham 11

thanks Sue, thats her in 1881 !!!.......not sure if thats her Janey - her father is definately James Brown

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 14 Oct 2009 17:33

Stephen - when you say "her father is definitely James Brown", you mean her marriage certificate definitely says her father was James Brown?

My gr-grfather's marriage certificate says his father was Francis Monck ... who never existed.

Father's names/occupations on marriage certificates can be many things. Given name of father, surname of mother, where parents weren't married but child knew father's name; maternal grandfather, in same situation. Stepfather's given name, father's surname; father's name, stepfather's occupation ... infinite possibilities.

Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

Stephen

Stephen Report 8 Jun 2010 15:28

I am still struggling to find Louisa's birth or her on 1861 and 1871 census........at her time of marriage in 1874 she was living in Coldharbour Lane (road Camberwell to Brixton).................and new ideas anyone?
So, as later census states she was born Camberwell, she obviously didnt move far.......so why am I struggling to find her on census 1871 and before!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks, that is a possibility!..........my only concern is James's profession and the fact that she is Louise on both census not Louisa.............when she married he was a compositor (printer)..........this is soooo hard!...........plus most of the later census have Louisa being born later than 1848, nearer 1852, 1853......I will have a closer look!

Having found this family in 1861, James is still a retailer of beer......but i suppose you could go from retailer to printer. on the plus side she is under the name Louisa on this census

Stephen

Stephen Report 8 Jun 2010 19:24

HI AGAIN
UNFORTUNATELY IT APPEARS NOT TO BE CAROLINE AND JAMES BROWN.
I HAVE MANAGED TO TRACE CAROLINE IN 1881 AND SHE IS STILL LIVING WITH LOUISE BROWN. SO THIS RULES OUT BEING MY FAMILY LINK AS MY LOUISA MARRIED IN 1874 AND WE HAVE FOUND HER UNDER HER MARRIED SURNAME OF FORSTER IN 1881

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS FOLKS.....JUST WHEN I THOUGHT WE WERE NEARLY THERE!!!!

You have the marriage certificate?
It seems so, since you have her address at marriage.
Who were the witnesses?

Please don't type in all capitals.

Could this be Louisa in 1871........the mother Sarah is a widow plus it seems that she has a brother James (named after the father maybe)????? Her full name and age agree.....

Louisa E Brown
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1854
Relation: Daughter
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: London, Middlesex, England
Civil parish: Bromley

Household schedule number: 123

my only problem is that I am now trying to find this Sarah (hopefully mariied to a James in 1861) but I am struggling with finding them in 1861

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2010 20:11

The 1881 is searchable by address; searching for Brown, address Coldharbour (Louisa's address when she married):

Name: Elizabeth Brown
Age: 76
Estimated birth year: abt 1805
Relation: Sister
Where born: Nennham, Gloucestershire, England

Condition as to marriage: Widower

Civil parish: Lambeth
County/Island: London
Street Address: 138 Coldharbour Lane

Ann Todd 66
Elizabeth Brown 76
Sarah J. Francis 18 (servant)

Name: Ann Todd
Age: 66
Estimated birth year: abt 1815
Relation: Head
Where born: Nennham, Gloucestershire, England

Possibly coincidence, possibly useful. Does the marriage certificate have a house number on Coldharbour Lane?

That household in 1871 -- address 19 Burton Rd, Lambeth.

Ann Todd 56
Elizabeth Brown 66
Elizabeth H Morse 20 - niece
Ann Brown 35 - niece
Eliza S E Chappell 50 (servant)

In 1861 they're in Camberwell (kind of mirrors Louisa's birthplace):

William Todd 70
Ann Todd 46
Elizabeth Brown 56
Elizabeth Brown 27
Helen Brown 17
Elizath Henla Morse 10
Sarah Smith 24
James Nash 52

Just to complete the set, in 1851 they're in Herefordshire:

Thomas Brown 35
Elizabeth Brown 46
William Henry Brown 19
Ann Brown 15
Caroline Brown 13
Matilda Brown 11
Maria Brown 9
Helen Brown 7
John Morse 14
Georgianna Heard 39

Could be related, but not immediate family, it seems.

I am really struggling to read the writing of the witnesses.......maybe Jemima Baker and George Thomas ?????.........it is on ancestry records if anyone can read it!!!

No number on cert. just says cold harbour lane

Still think I am onto something with the 1871 census - mother sarah

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2010 20:37

Still trying to trace the address ...

In 1871 it seems to have been called Chichester Terrace. Two of the families who were neighbours on Coldharbour Lane in 1881 (William Banning/Bauning 148, Henry Lander 146) are in the same position on Chichester Terrace(16, 17) in 1871. Oh, and also David Hawkins (142, 19).

This is a very stable and very prosperous bunch of neighbours, btw. Commercial clerk, Landscape artist/Barrister's clerk, etc.

I can't imagine there being a different Coldharbour Lane in the same area.

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2010 20:47

Hmm, this is your 1871 household in 1861 in Beckenham, Kent -- birthplaces match:

Wm Brown 44 - Labourer
Sarah Brown 38 - born Chingford, Essex
Robt Brown 15
Jessie Brown 5
N H Brown 1 - W H, undoubtedly (image is unclear) -- William H in 1871, born Beckenham
Emma Lowe 7 - niece

No Louisa, but a Jessie??
