I reckon its worth buying the cert for Benjamin c .you could use the check point of his father being Benjamin. Its logical he may have been reg Benjamin after his dad but then called Fred on a day to day basis,I have similar instances in my tree.You may get lucky too and the address ties up as well. Its worth a £3 punt as you will get a £4 refund if the checking point doesnt match.There certainly desont seem to be any frederick births that tie in

get the certs from here

you have to register free and they will give you a password for future in an email. (Tip ,save the email and copy and paste the password every time you want to log in to reorder,the password is case sensitive).
You must tick the box on the first page of the order thats asks is the GRO ref is known and then fill in where asked, you only need to specify what type of cert you are ordering AND for a marriage only one name is needed,
There is the check point ref on about page 3 of the order which if you tick takes you to another page where you can specify the check you want ie if you want them to check the fathers name then specify the name.
Payment is secure and by debit or credit card.
Once you have ordered it becomes easier to do each time.
I think we would all love to know if this is the right cert if you get it .

I'll do that tonight and don't worry I'll let you know if and when I get to the bottom of it because I don't know if my grandparents were both Australian or if Nan was English. soooooo confusing.

Now looking through your list of names I just looked at my grand mothers Death certificate in more detail and on there is My Fathers name Frederick cecil as the person to whom issued but in the columbs under Signatures description and residence information I have the initials and name of of what looks like JG Brown.

Oh I forgot to add that Audrey Brown was an aunt and edghill is where I was born edgehill is in Wavertree Liverpool. so its certainly on the right tracks

Jeff - no, I don't think that was at all what Quinsgran was saying - I think she was just recording the wrong Wigan b.cert you'd found previously. I think Benjamin's mid-name was Cecil - this was what I was hoping to find out from the local indices, without any joy - I guess you'll have to get that b.cert to know - and that Benjamin later went by the name of Frederick. If that is the case, then that does constitute a legal change of name - there was no requirement to register it, although as a practical matter, if he'd acquired any qualifications under the name Benjamin, it might have been worthwhile to put a change of name notice in the classified ads of the Liverpool Echo or whatever.

I'm wondering what his name was lol Like i said before I know my father told a lie to get into the forces by changing his name and age, so I'm wondering what his real name was, Why can't mine be Just a simple one to deal with.

I am going to speak to his widow tomorrow my step mother so I'll ask her some more questions to see if he ever told her any thing different to what we know and I will keep you all up to date with my findings.
