Now, if you've got the full source ref (rg11/4943/108/45 for 1881) one can go to Ancestry and do a free search - it won't give you all the info you'ld get with a sub, but it will give you the names as they've transcribed them.
So lets do 1871 - go to Ancestry, and from the bar at top select Search.
At the top right of page, select "old search"
Under Search in top bar, select Census & Voter lists from drop down menu.
From the "Search Individual Census Records:" list, pick 1871 England, then Show advanced options in the search screen.
The very last line lets you insert Piece Folio Page #
From Pam's post, we know the ref is:
Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 1959; Folio: 35; Page: 2; GSU roll: 830883.
Check exact matches only at top left of search box, and now search, and you'll get 25 hits for that page.

Incidentally, the preceeding page is rg10/1959/35/1 and the following page is rg10/1959/36/3. If I search for rg10/1959/-/2 with the folio # left blank, I get 98 hits, so I guess this piece had 4 enumeration districts. What they did was get all the books for a piece, and go thru them in order stamping every rught hand page with a folio #, using an increasing stamper. Thus, the page 2s from the 4 EDs all have different folio #s, and thus can be distinguished. Occassionally, with GR, you'll get a family split over 2 sheets - the Baileys on p 3-4 are such a family. This is how you can find these split families. It's not so bad if, like the Baileys, they've all got the same name, but if the folk on the next page are nieces and grandkids, they're not really guessable.
Note that, although the page # increases with every page, the folio # only increases with every other page. If you've purchased an image from GR, the rg10/1959 will be written on a slip in the image margin - you'll know the page #, and half the time you'll know the folio #. So what abt the other half.

Well, you could look up rg10/1959/-/2 and identify someone on your page, say Fred Barrett.
If you click on his view image link, you'll get taken to a page inviting you to subscribe.
Embedded in that page's URL is:
iid%3dWILRG10_1958_1962-0244 (%3d is the hex code for =, and just hovering over the view image link, you'll see an URL displayed in the bottom bar of your browser containing iid=WILRG10_1958_1962-0244)
This is the image ID - the end of the URL has the personal ID for Fred pid=4321822
on this image, the personal IDs are in sequential order - they aren't always, though.

Now, supposing I don't know Fred's folio # - just make a guess, and enter rg10/1959/50/- say. There's 48 hits, the first of which (hovering again) has an image ID of iid%3dWILRG10_1958_1962-0273, which is 29 images past Fred's image, so a guess of 36 shows I'm just past it, and Fred appears with a guess of 35.
(Occasionally, I might have to determine the piece # for Fred too, so get a hit for Fred, and note the 1958_1962 in his image ID, and try 1958 thru 1962 in turn to find Fred's piece #.)
When the personal IDs are in order, I can determine the household boundaries on folio # 35 by just listing the Heads and hovering.

The problem with GR search is that it's using a different transcription of the census, and much of the census is quite hard to transcribe with 100% accuracy.
So probably they're there but spelled slightly differently. One way round this problem is to look up another name on the same page, and hopefully that's transcribed the same both times.
Fortunately, Pam has given the full ref on her later census posts, (but not the earlier 1881-1901 posts). 1881 we can remedy, as Ancestry uses the free LDS transcription:

thanks so much pam

Im also looking to see if i can find the birth register for frederick barret in the 1871 census you mention aged 4 that way I could order his birth certificate and get the mother maiden name etc from that too :-)

oh so looks like she is prob his sister working for him as a house servant rather than wife x

Pam

Pam Report 11 Nov 2009 23:47

Really could be either. The 1841 census doesn't give much information so it is difficult to judge. Will take a closer look.

EDIT:

Well the 1841 census says both James and Susan were born in Middlesex.

James is described as a Lapidary :

A lapidary (the word means "concerned with stones") is an artist or artisan who forms stone, mineral, gemstones, and other suitably durable materials (amber, shell, jet, pearl, copal, coral, horn and bone, glass and other synthetics) into decorative items .

and Susan is H.S. (House Servant)

Shieldsman

Shieldsman Report 11 Nov 2009 23:40

Would you say the susan barrett showing would have been his 1st wife or could this have been his sister. just seems weared that there was a 40 year age gap between him and his wife and then still having children at 79?

Shieldsman Report 11 Nov 2009 23:38

Firstly I just want to say a HUGE thank you for your help

but secondly the search on genes must be rubbish as even using the info you have kindley given to me does not show on the genes search, its so frustrating, I guess Im going to have to save up and try and get on the ancestory thing you mention but its really difficult at the min with being made redundant, (better put the lottery on on sat lol)

Pam

Pam Report 11 Nov 2009 23:26

Possible marriage registration....but one of the children's birth registrations would confirm her maiden name.
