Hi, I am looking for the birth of DESMOND AIKIN

I have his marriage in 1931 to Mary J Wilson in Wigton, Cumberland

I have his death in 1986 in Carlisle Cumberland . The death on ancestry states his birth as 20 may 1909.

Where ? I can't find a birth for him not in 1909 or any year around it, Nor does he appear to be on the 1911 census

Any ideas anybody

Thanks

June

June Report 21 Nov 2009 11:25

This interesting Scottish name derives from "Ad", a pet form of the Hebrew male given name "Adam", meaning "red earth", with reference to the substance from which the first man was formed, plus the Olde English pre 7th Century diminutive suffix "-kin". One Atkyn de Barr is recorded in Ayrshire, in 1340. The surname first appears in the early 15th Century (see below), and Andrew Atkin appears as a witness in Aberdeen in 1469. Since the mid 17th Century the name has been widespread in north-east Ulster, the earliest reference being to William Ekyn, lessee on the Cunningham estate in 1613. In the modern idiom, the surname has many variant spellings including: Aiken, Aicken, Aikin, Aitkin, Aitken, Atkin, Aickin and Aitin

I wonder if this could be a sister?

Sorry I know that doesnt help with his birth but thought I would post

The only marriage for his possible parents was 1885 which is a bit early really to have had Desmond in 1909. It's looking more and more like they came from Scotland

*Re-vamping this thread for new info*

I have still lost DESMOND AIKIN or at least the birth of. I now have the marriage cert of Desmond and Mary J WILSON
He was age 22 in 1931 which does make him born in 1909 His father is
HENRY LINDSAY AIKIN deceased a gas manager ....

There is a death in Wigton in 1926 for Henry L age 55 making his DOB 1871

I CAN'T find him either. He doesn't show up on the Scottish census of 1901 and he doesn't show up on a search of the 1911.

In Wigton biths after 1900 are
Births Jun 1916 (>99%)
Aikin Agnes B McCaw Wigton 10b 1157 I think maybe a sister

Births Sep 1924 (>99%)
AIKIN Patricia M Aikin Wigton 10b 1089
Interesting could be an older sister to Desmond being naughty

Births Mar 1932 (91%)
Aikin Kathleen A Wilson Wigton 10b 846
Desmonds child I know of

Births Sep 1932 (94%)
Aikin Maureen Carr Wigton 10b 845
the child of Kennedy Aikin and Isabella Carr who married in 1932 Wigton
Is Kennedy a brother to Desmond as I can't find him either

There is a death for a Lucy Aikin in Wigton age 50 in 1922 could this be the mother possibly making her Lucy McCaw b 1872 who I can't find.
I also can't find an Aikin -McCaw marriage

Help please ...Thank you for looking

Have a look here - this might just make your day!!

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002295581/

Then go to the record pilot search on www.familysearch.org

If you are going to order certificates from Roscommon, then they will accept euro notes rpovided you mail them "signed for"

As is so often the case - Scottish and Irish surnames can so often be alike.

Desmond was born in Northern ireland and yes Kennedy was his brother.

If you google Aikin family from Wigton Cumberland ,the first on page has henry lindsay Aikin parents and siblings and all Henry Lindsay Aikin's wife Agnes Bloomer and children nearly all were born in Donagadee Northern ireland.

This is 100% the people you are looking for.

No problem - and Henry's occupation is correct on the image of the actual household return! That Aunt living with them also lets you know where Kennedy got his name! Because the census tells you how long that they had been married for you should be able to find the marriage certificate too.

Well done Dea - those look promising! It looks like the whole family came over from Ireland together then.

I possibly should have said here that the Irish cerificates don't give a lot of information (a bit lke the English ones). But then I am probably just spoiled with so many Scottish ones. I ordered some Irish certificates recently and was a bit disappointed that on the widows death certificate, it didn't even give her late husband's name - just his occupation!

Put Aiken from Donaghadee in search ,there are 3 people who have trees with same people as yours including a Maxwell.
