Jennifer

You can either ask someone to get you some software for Christmas eg Rootsmagic, Family Treemaker etc. or you can download Personal Ancestral File (PAF) free at www.familsearch.org I used the free one for years and the advantage of it is if you want to share with other members of your family everyone has free access to the software.

I did a course a couple of years ago and they wanted us to use Family Treemaker which I now use for my own family stuff. The benefit of it is if you have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk, when you enter a new name you can see if there are possible matches on Ancestry (eg Census records that match the name and year of birth).

The references that your were asking about are where the helpers have given you the "Source" reference so the record can be found again. Software programmes for storing your tree usually allow you to store your sources. They can also be a useful way of filing hard copies of your material.

Many thanks for everyones help especially Mel. I have found out that there are several spellings of BICKERDYKE which is very interesting. I am sorting out the maze of info given, just one murky bit is:

My understanding of the family is

JOSEPH BORN 1786 MARRIED 18 JULY 1819
ANN DAY BORN 1788.

I cannot figure out how Matthew born 18 July 1809 can be their son

I did find twins called Matthew and Banjamin but they appeared to die before they reached one years of age.

Is it worth joining Ancestry.co.uk. Will I learn quicker and is it easy to use and finally when I have all this info what is the best web page to build my tree on.. Thanks again

There is also a Benjamin Biggadite with the birth of 16 Jul 1809 which I think must be a transcription error and they were twins as 18 Jul for Matthew and 16 for Benjamin both Christened same day same parents

Matthew Bickerdyke's parents were Joseph Bickerdyke born Yorkshire and Ann Day born Cheshire.

Joseph Bickerdyke married Ann Day.

I should think this is the Christening of Israel 1836 as his daughters marriage comes under Lancashire/Cheshire and he had a son Matthew.

Jennifer it is all on Ancestry.com

The marriages to Lydia and Lavinia are the same Israel born 1836 Cheshire. The last one I put up could be his son born 1860.

Okay getting loads of info now, will be able to look properly tonight. One thought though, could be great great grandfather Israel was married to Lydia and son Israel was married to Lavinia. Still can't figure out how you got all this in such a short time, I must be looking in the wrong places coupled with inexperience.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 26 Nov 2009 15:56

Thats why I put up the two marriages to Lydia and Lavina.

Also on the 1891 census Israel is a widower with daughters.

OMG such info. I am obviously doing something wrong. I do know he was born in 1836 and lived in Dukinfield etc. I am very interested to find out where all this info was found. There seems to be some differences. My great grandmother was called Margaret Ann however I thought his wife was called Lydia not Lavinia. Also what are all the numbers (RG, Folio) so much to learn so little time..........
