Hi Derek,

Could you please help me, I am searching for any records of John Linacre & Mary Travers who had son John who came to Australia on ship Maitland in 1840 aged 21 years. I cannot find any information of his parents & the names of his siblings, plenty of information on him in Australia, he was my G G Grandfather.

Marie

Hello Marie..you've set me a poser here!!..you don't give me any information about whereabouts these people were from..but because it is obvious that I am a Derbyshire specialist..I assume you're looking in Derbys....

I can find no Derbyshire connections at this stage..but me bein me I've had a hunt around, and if your John fits any of the following, we could be in business:

JOHN LINACRE baptised11.04.1819 in LIVERPOOL!!!!!...son of John Linacre (a Butcher) and his wife Mary nee TRAVIS not Travers.

John 1819 finished up in Australia where he died 11.06.1880.having at some stage married MARGARET CLARK.......

..if any of this fits, let me know and we can go from there.
EDIT........11.39BST..........Well!! it clearly does fit because JOHN LINACRE aged 20 was convicted at Lancaster Crown Court Lancashire..and sentenced to be Transported for TEN YEARS to New South Wales....and left Liverpool on board the "MAITLAND" 13.04.1839
woohoo!!!! lol

Ok..Peter.......here is the news on the background of RHODA HUNT.....

ELIZABETH NUTTALL.. daughter of Edward and Mary Nuttall baptised Staveley Derbyshire 18.02.1759...

she married:GEORGE CHAMBERS 15.07.1777 at Staveley and had three children:-

Edward Chambers 11.01.1778
George Chambers 14.09.1788
ELIZABETH CHAMBERS 30.01.1790..........who married JOHN HUNT...baptised Eckington 02.11.1784 son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Betty) Hunt..

John and Elizabeth were married 09.09.1806..and produced three surviving children:-

Hannah 07.01.1816
RHODA HUNT 28.12.1817 who married GEORGE HUDSON 23.06.1811..

same year he was born.......

Hello Derek,
Could you please give me exact dates on marriage for a James Henry fairbairn to a Nellie Shaw. They were married 1893 Derbyshire. Also their children Sarah Edna May born 1900, Horace Thomas Allan born 1901 and Ronald born 1904 all Derbyshire. I am not sure if they had any more children after Ronald.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
You are doing a wonderful job helping so many people.
Patricia.

Derek Report 16 Oct 2011 12:53

Hello Patricia..nice to hear from you...This took a bit of sorting because you say "Derbyshire" without any further clues..and derbyshire is a large County!!

However.....straight answer is NO..I cannot give you the exact date of the marriage...all i can tell you is that it was July/Aug/September 1893 in the Civil registration District of Derby.......The marriage does not appear in any parish records i have..and may have been a Civil Wedding....and not in Church.....

There is a parish "Shardlow and Wiln" for which \i don't have the records....where Nellie's birth is regstered July/Aug/Septmber 1877

I don't know how much you know about the family..buts its intricate and interesting:-

JAMES HENRY FAIRBAIRN was baptised 01.01.1875 son of James and Harriet Fairbairn..in TRURO CORNWALL..Harriet's maiden name was BEDDARD......The Fairbairns came from Scotland and i have traced them back to 1795...........

The 1881 Census has James \henry aged 6....living in Derby with his Grandparents the Beddards..and a related set of in-laws call ROOKE...haven't quite worked that one out yet........perhaps something happened to his parents.............I have also traced the Beddards back.....and there is a rather nice photo of Emily Beddard.James' grandmother.....

NELLIE MAY SHAW was born 1877 one of several children of James and Emma Shaw..

James henry appears on the 1891 Census in Matlock bath..apparently at a pretty smart Private School where he is a Boarder.....

1901 he and Nellie are in derby..and the 1911 Census at 39 Chatsworth Street Derby..with their three children......James \henry has done very well for himself ..is a Cashier and has two servants....

Interestingly he is on the 1891 simply as Harry Fairbairn......

One final intersting fact......SARAH EDNA MAY FAIRBAIRN appears as the only child on the 1901 Census.born 1900..but Horace Thomas Allan and Ronald are on the 1911.......the family had an annoying knack of dropping their first Christian name..\sarah is in fact Edna,,and Horace is thomas!!!

SARAH EDNA and HORACE THOMAS were both baptised ON THE SAME DAY...29.12.1901 at Derby St. Thomas..( a fairly common occurence)...Ronald 1904 i am unable to find a birthdate for.....

I hope this all helps..and if you want to inestigate the earlier heritage of the Fairbairns and the Shaws..just ask.

all the best

Derek.

Hello Derek,
Thank you very much for all that info. I didn't expect you to spend too much of your time on my request. I am very greatful for all the work you have done on the Fairbairn, Shaw family.
I do know a bit about the Families involved. I will PM you with the details I have.
Thanks again.

Derek Report 17 Oct 2011 20:21

Hello again Peter..I have been struggling a bit with the Hudsons..main problem being that there are two different George Hudson born at Staveley.....of different parents......so whilst i can give you most of the facts...I'm still not sure that I can take George HUDSON any further back until I am sure........It would be easy to plump for one or the other, but I am a stickler for FACTS...and Certainty.

Here is the problem...GEORGE HUDSON baptised 23.06.1811 son of William and hannah Nee Redfearn.......
..and GEORGE HUDSON baptised Staveley 10.03.1804 son od David and Mary nee Wood...

OK..the three Census entries for George give 1811/1812 for his birth Date.......but Censuses would round down or round up pretty well as they felt..but they do all give Rhoda..and they all give the children ..

..on the other hand there is a very full and complete Tree on Ancestry giving George and Rhoda.with George born 1804 son of David and Mary.....

The only way to solve it would be to see the \marriage certificate for George and Rhoda which would give his father.......IF it took place after 1837....but it took place 1835 and does not mention the father...and since, by the 1841 census george was already married..we don't get his father.

Now normally \i would plump for the 1811 baptism..son of William and Hannah....in which case the Staveley parish records would give a birth for WILLIAM HUDSON around 1775.........and the only William Hudson baptised at Stavely other than 1740 and 1796....is William \hudson born 1755...DIED four months later.....

By the same token i am not prepared to plump for the 1804 birth of George son of David and Mary..even though there is a perfectly good line both backwards and forwards in the Staveley parish records..because a seven year difference between the births of the two george's is just bit too much..and all three Censuses more or less agree with 1811..........so that is my favourite.......but i just cannot find his father William.......

Peter..read this carefully and tell me your thoughts......or any cast iron evidence you have either way.......

Hi Derek
I have William and Hannah as the parents of George Hudson but i have no other information. Could it be that William was not born in Staveley I have put some feelers out for some William Hudson born in Sheffield. Will let you know if I get any results.

Hi Derek

Thank you for information about John Linacre to Australia, you are correct, we have lots of information regarding him in Australia, I would really like to know more about his parents and siblings that were left behind as they were my ancestors.. I have been given a lead that he had an older brother Joseph but am not sure.
I am sure they would be very proud of his descendants in Australia.

Regards
Marie.
