Can anyone help me here please?
I have Colin McLeod born c1875 (possibly in Glasgow) he married Margaret Letson (I think she was from Greenock).
I also have James McLeod born c1880.
I was wondering if some kind person can check the Census's to see if these two are related, please?

Many thanks,

Sandra

Do you know when Colin and Margaret were married?

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 11:27

Potty, I'm sorry I don't but they had a son called Jim (James) born 1900.

Potty

Potty Report 5 Dec 2009 11:33

Was their son born in Scotland? Did they always live in Scotland?

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 11:35

Yes, as far as I'm aware.

So, it looks as if you don't have James's birth cert. If not, where have you got Margaret's maiden name from? And Colin's DOB?

Can you give all the info you have, and where you got it from?

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 11:39

James McLeod married Mary Gray but that was about 1922 in Glasgow.

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 11:42

Got James's marriage on SP, his parents were James McLeod (Boilermaker) and mother Sarah ms Johnstone.

Potty

Potty Report 5 Dec 2009 11:46

Does James's marriage cert give his father's occupation?

I cannot find a Colin and Margaret McLeod in the 1901 census

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 11:49

Potty, his father was a Boilermaker. According to marriage cert, James was born 1895.

Potty Report 5 Dec 2009 11:56

Sandra, I am confused now - I thought James's b1900 parents were Colin and Margaret!

And who is the James b1880?

Potty

Sorry for confusing you Potty.
James McLeod married my dads (adopted mothers) sister but I have Margaret Letson (related to my dads birth mothers husband) married to a Colin McLeod (I can't remember where I got that from).
I confuse myself all the time.

There is only one marriage coming up on Scotlandspeople for a James McLeod and Sarah Johnstone between 1885 and 1891. It is 1890 in Glasgow city. I don't have any credits to view it but it will give you James's father which I think will be needed to go back further on the census.

Potty,
Thank you so much.
Can I be cheeky and ask if you can please find Margaret Letson born c1876 Renfrewshire, (1891 and 1901) her parents were James Letson and Anna ms Johnstone, they married October 1863 in Greenock.

Thank you.

Potty

Potty Report 5 Dec 2009 12:36

Colin and Margaret were married in Greenock in 1902 - only marriage on Scotlands people. The cert will give Colin's father and perhaps give a clue to his relationship (if any to James).

Will try to find Margaret in 1881 as you seem to have the 1891 and 1901

Sandra

Sandra Report 5 Dec 2009 12:39

Potty,
I'm not getting any marriage coming up on SP for James and Sarah.
Potty, I would like the 1891 and 1901 Census please.

James is a boilermaker - same occupation as James McLeod!

James and Anna both born Ireland

I see that Margaret's mother's maiden name was Johnstone, as was the Sarah, married to James b1873. Could they be related?
