Did you manage to look in trade directories or apprentice records,

It still bothers me that as a master greengrocer of Tunbridge wells we cannot find him.
He could have been born anywhere.

I have searched directories with no luck, unable to find any ref to him via guild of Master Grocers. Also we have to bear in mind if the second marriage is his then he was in London in 1863. I have looked for him with a wife Mary but although I have found a couple with the right names none of them appear to be either Grocers or Dealers.

Harriet Bennet widow of Charles William Bennett Master Grocer of Tunbridge Wells.

would you want that as your epitaph if you had been sbandoned.? unlike; as she was living where he was supposed to have liveddSurely you would want no association with the name.

Did you add anything to the Tunbridge Wells family history Society Guest book?

Hi Ladykira, Im inclined to agree with you , I most certainly wouldnt want to be associated with someone who had abandoned me, I just dont know if her brother actually new a lot about her life, He had only been living in Tunbridge Wells for a couple of years before she died. Perhaps she abandonded her husband, I cant help wondering if Martin new she was calling herself Martin, or have the whole family really vanished and we are wrong about everything. I did post a message on the Tunbridge Wells guest book, quite honestly I had forgotten, it was quite a while ago. Chrys.

Hi, I just thought I would let you know that I am now pretty certain that Harriet Martin is the one and the same Harriet Bennett, I was having another look through censuses and noticed on the 1891 one there is a Walter E Coller living next door to her, being curious I sent of for the birth cert and it turns out his mother was Martin Collars daughter Elizabeth. She married a William Love, born 1866 Tunbridge Wells in 1891, on 1901 census I find a Walter Edward Love in Gillingham kent with Elizabeth and William, but there is no record of his birth as Love. I then looked back on censuses and only then did I see Harriet Martin 1871, with nieghbors George Love and family, Williams Father, It seems obvious Harriet and Martin were in touch with one another and Elizabeth and William proberly met while she was in Tunbridge Wells( he is a visitor on 1891 at a house she is lodging in. I have also found a death for a Charles William Bennett 1866 in Wandsworth London age 6, which is where Martin was living and Im hopeing its the missing son. Will let you know as soon as i receive it, just wanted to thank you and say I proberly would have just shelved this if you hadnt taken the time to respond to my pleas for help, best wishes Chrys.

How exciting. This has been interesting as we have not found a record of Harriet and her husband together on any census. You are one step closer.

hi Ladykira, Yes I did know it was you, my message was specificly meant for you. I was for giving up on this, but your interest prompted me to have another go at it. I knew about the child Walter but had not got his birth cert. I thought he was born after Elizabeths marriage, dont know if William Love is his actual biological father though, once again many thanks for your help, Chrys.
