Good afternoon. I am confused over what I read on my GGrandmother's death entry in the records.

Peacock Doris O Rochford 4a 873/8? Dec 1968 Aged 59?

The writing is very feint but I have tried to compare it to other letters/numbers around it and made out the details above. Howeevr I received my Grandmothers birth Cert. today and it clearly states her name as Doris Olive Peacock nee Morgan. When I look for her birth the only match I can get is a birth in Neath in 1901. This obviously doesn't match up with her age at time of death. I know her Mother was called Margaret so if anybody has access to the 1911 census it would be great if they could see if the 1901 birth lived with a Margaret.
I hope this all makes sense and any help will be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance, Lorna.

Thank you very much. That at least cancels that one for me. Shame Morgan is such a popular name!!

Lorna, can you just clarify a bit? --

"Howeevr I received my Grandmothers **birth Cert.** today and it clearly states her name as Doris Olive Peacock nee Morgan"

Not her birth certificate, I think -- her marriage certificate, or her death certificate?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Feb 2010 18:25

If this is her marriage

Name: Doris O Morgan
Spouse Surname: Peacock
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1928
Registration district: Rochford
Registration county (inferred): Essex
Volume Number: 4a
Page Number: 1575

that certificate will give you her father's name (hopefully), and then you'd have a better chance of finding her in the 1911.

Lorna Report 8 Feb 2010 18:34

Apologies, I received my Grandmothers birth cert. today which states her Mother (my GGrandmother)as Doris Olive Peacock(Morgan) as so far I have found Doris' marriage and death but as I had no other information there are too many 'Doris Morgan's' to find her just on that information. I wasn't sure if I was reding the death entry right or not and thought with a middle name it would be easier. I don't yet have the marriage certificate, was hoping to find the birth without it in hand first. Thanks for having a look for me.

Do you know when Margaret the mother of Doris married and to whom.

Percy John Peacock J/A/S 1905 Rochford 4a 712.

Hi Florence,
Yes I am coming to learn that sometimes ages have to be taken with a pinch of salt. My Grandmothers birth cert. states her name clearly as Doris Olive as I thought from the death record it could have been an O,B or C. Her husband registered the birth but I can't imagine he would have gotten her name wrong, would he??!!
I know Doris' Mother was called Margaret and was born in 1883 as she died in 1983 aged 100. Doris was one of an estimted 16 children which gives a large number of years in which she could have been born without an accurate age. I guess I will need her marriage cert. this should answer some more details with added accuracy.
Thanks for helping!

Lorna Report 8 Feb 2010 19:04

Hello Mary,
Unfortunately I do not yet know who Margaret was married to. Again Margaret Morgan her married name is very common, although my family all lived/died in Rochford/Southend Essex including Margaret, Morgan is a very Welsh name so I am not sure if she married a Welshman or whether she was born there herself and moved East. Questions that need answering at a later date! Once I can find Doris' birth it should tell me where she was born and then I can have an educated guess at where her parents married. Thanks for looking for me.

If you bought the death certificate for Margaret, - who you are sure is a relative, it should state her husband's name, with her as 'wife of' or 'widow of'.....

Maybe there was an article in the paper for her birthday?

Perhaps the registration....?
Name: Margaret Matilda Morgan
Birth Date: 5 Apr 1883
Death Registration Month/Year: 1983
Registration district: Southend On Sea
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 9

Margaret Matilda births June quarter 1883

Births Jun
ABBEY Margaret Matilda Knaresbro' 9a 102
Fisher Margaret Matilda Sheppey 2a 873
Townsley Margaret Matilda Tynemouth 10b 231

Unfortunately, none of them seems to have married a Morgan.

Good Evening Gwyn,

I hadn't thought of getting Margarets death cert. for her husbands details. She was a widow at time of death. I was 4 at the time of her death and clearly remember the newspaper article/photo. She lived in Rayleigh at the time but I live in Worcestershire now so i'm not local any more otherwise i'm sure the local libraries would have archived newpapers. I could try contacting the local paper though, they may be able to locate the article. I did try finding it on the internet a few years ago but I couldn't locate it then.

Thank you very much for the ideas. It's all a great help.

Hi Janey,

Thanks for that, I suppose there is the possibility that she married was widowed so married a 'Morgan' under her married name. Do you think that could have happened?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Feb 2010 19:34

Working on another theory. ;)

Marriages Jun 1903
Morgan William Maldon 4a 1091
Pudney Margaret Matilda Maldon 4a 1091

If you search at FreeBMD for Morgan births with mother Pudney you will find an absolute scad of them in Rochford after 1911.

Only problem is, no Margaret Matilda Pudney was ever born ...

This one would fill the bill, though.

Births Jun 1883
PUDNEY Margaret Lexden 4a 478

Being this one in 1901:

Name: Margaret Pudney
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1884
Relation: Sister
Where born: Fordham, Essex, England

Civil parish: St Lawrence Newland
Town: St Lawrence Newland
County/Island: Essex
Registration district: Maldon

George Pudney 33
Susannah Pudney 61
Ernest Pudney 19
Margaret Pudney 17

Hi Janey,

Have just done the search and wow that has to be some of the children, as I said previously I am told there are 16 children so assume some records are not yet transcribed or just hiding. My GGrandmother would have been born approx 1909 if age at death is anywhere near correct.
I can only assume there has been a name change, adoption or an extra marriage somewhere along the line, the plot thickens! Thanks for opening many more doors!
