Oh quite possibly a boundary change, I didn't even bother to check. I well know where Reddish is, right on the border of Lancashire/Cheshire.

That is the right Laura Dyson, I am sure.

Yep, I know Strines very well. Nothing there but a string of (nice) houses and what used to be the Calico Printers Works. You didn't by chance know a family called Bissett who lived there did you? I went to primary school with a Graham Bissett, born about 1952. Lived in Strines.

What's even odder, Meg, is that the 1911 census match for Laura came up when I asked for "Cheshire" - and she is living in Reddish - but it says she is born Reddish, Lancashire. Maybe some boundary change during her lifetime? Or maybe her family were just rubbish at geography! Actually I suspect what happened is that her dad (who WAS born in Lancashire) just got a bit lazy with the form and "dittoed" the Lancashire. I'll take a look at the original.

Hmm - yes, he HAD used a fair number of ditto marks but has repeated Reddish, Lancashire once or twice. Just rubbish at geography then!

I have also double checked and she IS the only Laura Dyson of ANY age in Cheshire - so whilst I agree everything should be double checked with certificates, I'm placing my money on this being her.

BTW, my mother in law lives in Strines, which I guess you must know. And she used to run a tea room in Marple!

Now getting stuck on Laura Dyson.

Think you need her marriage cert ascertain her father.

Reddish and Romiley are adjacent. Odd that Reddish is classed as Lancashire. Maybe my history of the area ain't so tip-top. Stockport is Cheshire. They are all in the same area anyway.

Ooh, that is great news to me Rachael. Bored out of my skull at the moment, and I live in the Stockport area.

I would love to take over, but work is preventing me from doing too much at the moment.

Your help is gratefully appreciated as without it I would be getting nowhere.

Thankyou

I forgot to look for that spouse to James Wagstaff - she is Laura Dyson.

Madmeg

Having gladly found all that, do you want to now research further yourself, cos I don't want to spoil your fun. Or would you like me (and others who are no doubt keeping an eye on your thread) to carry on with more?

Best wishes

Thinking again, you probably don't need Hilda's birth cert. It seems pretty obvious who her parents were.

The marriage of Hilda and Cecil will give you his father, but hang on, cos I might find that in the Isle of Wight.

This is the marriage of Hilda and Cecil:

Spouse is Cecil H Chiverton.

He might have been from the Isle of Wight, but they didn't marry there.

Brilliant, thanks for your help

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 21 Feb 2010 20:21

Rachael, you have misunderstood what I sent you. This is the likely birth of Hilda Wagstaff, with mothers maiden name Dyson. Seems 99.9% likely to be her. The registration of a birth would not include details of anything other than the child's parents and possible address at birth (thought that might be a hospital).

It is nothing to do with who else is living there.

Using what I have posted, you can send for this birth certificate and determine who her parents were, and perhaps where they lived at the time, though this might just say "Romiley".

Oops I posted the birth twice, but also a likely marriage of a Wagstaff to a Dyson, but to be sure it is the right couple, you would need to buy Hilda's birth certificate first.
