In the advanced search of the 1911 census I have put in Durham as the place of birth for Sarah Lizzie Unwin (I can't remember where I got this nugget from!) and this is accepted as correct. However I can find no entry in FreeBMD for any birth c.1886 in the area of Durham. Has anybody any ideas of a solution please?

I have remembered where the durham came from - the 1901 census. I tried the 1911 with each of the places from the 1901 entries until I got a match but Boldon does not work.
Please could someone give me the 1901 for Sarah E from West Boldon to see if this sheds any light on the girl.
My recollection is that both places had strong coal mining links so the father's job could have moved him to Hemsworth.....

Hi Dee, the Benson idea looks fantastic, why does the 1901 mean it has to be scrapped?

I liked the Benson idea... until I saw the 1901 census, I would have thought that sarh would be old enough by 1901 to know that a possible Mr Yates was not her father and she would marry under Benson.

If John Benson had of died when she was a small child then maybe it could have worked, but with him still being alive in 1901 I don't think it would. I can't also see a marriage for Benson and Yates.

Yes Dee that is rather a downer. In 1907 I suppose Sarah Lizzie is old enough to be on a second marriage so again her birth surname could be .....?

I think the only way to know is to order the marriage cert and see what she has stated on there.

Yes Dee I know the marriage certificate gives the best chance but it isn't my family and prizing £7 out of the true relative is going to be an uphill struggle!
Anyway it spoils the thrill of getting the right answer purely by sleuthing...

I understand where your coming from, but I can't see any other way of finding out..... sleuthing is great and I have turned up many suprising things in my time on the boards.... but there are just no clues with Sarah Lizzie, unless the 1911 census tells more...... family living with her of Yates or something??
