Dee, I am taking the 1871 census you have just put up, comparing Joseph age 9 and Mary H age 7 withChoccy's 1901 Joe 1863 Spofforth and Mary (married name Yates) 1865 Spofforth. Mary (Benson) had Sarah Lizzie at Seaham in 1885 then went to Wigan where she married Edward Yates (missing in 1901?) and later on to more Benson clan in Hemsworth.

Now have the marriage certificate,
George William Unwin aged 22 married Sarah Lizzie Benson Yates aged 21 on the 1st april 1907 at St Helens church Hemsworth.Georges dad is listed as Joe Unwin a miner and Sarahs dad as Edward Yates a mill hand.
The marriage was witnessed by Sarah Benson and ?Bassett cant work out the first name

I understand where your coming from, but I can't see any other way of finding out..... sleuthing is great and I have turned up many suprising things in my time on the boards.... but there are just no clues with Sarah Lizzie, unless the 1911 census tells more...... family living with her of Yates or something??

Yes Dee I know the marriage certificate gives the best chance but it isn't my family and prizing £7 out of the true relative is going to be an uphill struggle!
Anyway it spoils the thrill of getting the right answer purely by sleuthing...

Yes Dee that is rather a downer. In 1907 I suppose Sarah Lizzie is old enough to be on a second marriage so again her birth surname could be .....?

I liked the Benson idea... until I saw the 1901 census, I would have thought that sarh would be old enough by 1901 to know that a possible Mr Yates was not her father and she would marry under Benson.

If John Benson had of died when she was a small child then maybe it could have worked, but with him still being alive in 1901 I don't think it would. I can't also see a marriage for Benson and Yates.
