Just had a look at a map, and Cambusbarron is just west of Stirling, in St Ninian's parish, and has nothing whatsoever to do with Haddington.

I think this is Janet with her family in 1841, except JAMES' wife is Margaret.
Living in Cambusbarron.
Notice the ROBBINS b.1827 - (Female) I think this should be Robina/Robbina.

Do you have the marriage certificate please? Who, exactly does Janet give for her parent's names? Or did you get her parent's names from her death certificate? Remember information on death certificates is only as good as the informant's knowledge.

Haddington is in East Lothian.

The 1841 census didn't give relationships to the head of the household so that Margaret may be a daughter.

James Finlayson was obviously a fairly common name in that area.

You really need to tell us Janet's details from that marriage certificate.

are not appearing on the IGI - so one of two things either they weren't christened in the Church of Scotland, so probably won't appear on the OPRs at Scotlandspeople as these ar mostly C of S records or the family were members of some other church. This makes me think that the Janet in this family probably wasn't christened in the Church of Scotland either.

If it was my family, I would try to find a marriage for one of the above to find out who the mother is and compare that with the mother on your Janet's marriage certificate.

I would think Margaret is a daughter not James' wife as suggested by Kath

I have so far been unable to find deaths for James and Robina

it looks as though James dies between 1851-1855 and Robina sometime before 1841

Kath, I don't think you really misled anyone. It is difficult without all the details to begin with!

Aileen - well done for getting the details from the marriage certificate - that really helps to sort out those two families. If those details had been posted right at the start it would have made it a bit easier. The difficulty is though, the poster is sitting with the details in front of them and may not realise what is needed to help them find the correct family.

So, it looks more likely that James and his wife came from Perthshire.

If you a search on the IGI for children using the above parents names - it looks like some children born Paisley, some Balfron, Stirlingshire and some Perthdshire all about the possible years for this couple to produce children. I am not necessarily saying that they are all your family!

I have not yet purchased certificates from back home, bit frightened of the system, but will do so now.I have been getting use to the ones in Australia so far.
I do not have but will now buy David Gibson and Janet Finlayson's marriage certificate from Scotlands People as you have suggested, then her parents as well.
Kath, it is indeed the family in the 1871 and 1888 census. I have only just started using this in the library and glad you showed me they, the census, are useful tools.
'mgnv, just googled the UK maps and indeed Haddington is east of Edinburgh back home,obviously got this bit wrong!
