I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking that way ArgyllGran - I can honestly say whenever I have asked the boards for any help it has always been given gladly and I have tried to do the same. Can you imagine how rich we would all be if we charged .. mind you I would be able to afford those medals then ha ha.
It's good to have a sense of humour.
I think I'll do a spot of research into my maternal side of the family again and stay clear of the Wicks side for a while.

Don't feel naïve, Lynne - I don't think it had occurred to many of us either. Certainly not me.

Although we know that occasionally someone will use these boards improperly, for commercial purposes, most people are here just to help other researchers and to have fun in the process.

And feed our addiction!

Having read the above messages I will say again thanks for the interest in this - however - I must be naïve as when I originally read that Daniel wanted to reunite the medals with Percy Wicks' family I presumed that was it.... that basically he wanted to return my Gt. Grandfathers medals to the family. Monetary values did not even cross my mind for either buying or selling them. Daniel had offered to sell them to me at £250 less than the asking price but as we are only a small family and I am on a pension and even with my childrens' help we cannot manage the required amount ( maybe not a large sum to some people but a lot to others) I am disappointed and saddened with the outcome because Grampas medals would have remained in my family no matter what - but I have to accept that my parents nor myself dealt with the wishes etc of my Gt Gran when she died and so those medals are gone from the family now and if I hadn't re-read my 2010 post I would never have known where these medals were. Like I said it was a bitter/sweet end to the trail. I have added a story to the livesofthefirstworldwar page about my lovely Grampa - Chief Yeoman of Signals and later Coastguard - Percy Wicks. I have added some dates too - Daniel has placed a photo of the medals on the page

btw Lynne I did get your private message too, but please feel free to post your replies in this thread as it makes things easier to follow.

Lynne is very disappointed, understandably so.

I guess the price was out of reach even if family were to pass the hat ...

Daniel seems to be paying attention, but obviously declining to make the offer.

And no, I have no compunctions about that :-D

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Jul 2017 01:04

I sent Daniel Starr a link to this page when I posted my message above.

That private message from me to him has been read, so presumably he then read my message in this thread and possibly others, and then set his account that way. Hm, because he is in my contacts, apparently I can still PM him ...

The very absolute least he can do is what the messsage AustinQ quoted suggested, making the photos available on line. He can very easily send them to LynneDee as attachments here at GenesReunited as well, of course.

Nyx exactly the same happened to me, it was a cousin of my grandparent whose medals I found on line at an auction site, already sold. (Auction sites never post sale prices publicly, you have to pay to register to find out.) I asked that a message be passed to the buyer but I got no reply from the buyer. But yes, at least I was able to see the medal at that site ... but unfortunately I think I neglected to save a copy, thinking that the internet was forever ...

Just for ref, I had also clicked on Daniel's name and it was showing that he could not be contacted and no surname showing)

I found a gt uncle's medals had been sold through an auction house, too late to buy and would not have been able to afford them, but it was nice to have the auction photo and details so I could place where he was serving and in which campaigns.

If Daniel does sell them it would be nice as has been said if he could photograph them first so that Lynne could see them.

Thanks to you all for all your help and thoughts regarding Percy Wicks medals
.
My grandfather was a very modest man who said nothing exciting happened in his naval career but along with many others he was a hero and I am very proud and honoured to be related to him.

I just hope his medals will be kept safe and looked after by whoever has them now.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 15 Jul 2017 15:52

Daniel also posted on another site to ask if anyone was interested in the medals of Percy Wicks- this was the reply to Daniel, which I hope he has considered:

"Do you have a Memorial Page on Fold3 for Percy Wicks. I highty recommend that you find someone who will scan these medals - front and back and have the photos of them placed on a Fold3 Memorial page. Percy Wicks is one of our heroes and he should be honored."
---------------------------------

Daniel,
I understand that people might want to sell medals, but this is not the site to do that. However, now that you have made contact with a family member, I do hope you will send scans of the medals to Lynnedee or, at least upload the scans to any relevant sites.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Jul 2017 15:39

I fully agree with you, JC.

Interesting that Daniel appears to have reopened his account with GR.
Lynne PM'd me to say that she had tried PM-ing him, but clicking his name only produced a message to say that she could only contact him if he was on her contact list. I tried it myself, in case it was a blip on her computer. I forget the exact wording of the onscreen message, but he was definitely not contactable by PM, there was no name in the "To" box, and the wording implied that he had deleted his account.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 15 Jul 2017 15:21

Daniel's use of this site for commercial purposes, and to state his wish to reunite medals with family and not mention that it would be for a hefty fee, is rather despicable.

Perhaps he will see this, indeed.

Are we sure he has deleted his account? Clicking his name still gets a message form for sending a private message to

Daniel Starr.

Lynnedee, I hope you were at least offered photographs of the medals.

PM from Lynnedee:

Hello again, just to let you know I did make contact with the elusive Daniel but I haven't the funds to buy my Great Grandfathers (Percy Wicks) medals from him but I thank you and Nyx and the other folk who helped me find ways to track Daniel down. A somewhat bitter sweet ending to my trail but thanks again for all the help.

Lynnedee -

You sent me a private message asking how to get in touch with Daniel.

Either wait for him to contact you via this thread, or click on his name (as you did with me) and send him a private message, in case he doesn't look at this thread again.

EDIT:

No, you can't send him a message - it appears he has deleted his account.

I'm afraid you'll just have to hope he returns to the thread and sees that you want to make contact. But if he's deleted his account it doesn't seem very likely, unfortunately.

Have you checked your GR Inbox in case he sent you a message after he was advised to do so last month?
(Although perhaps you wouldn't be able to read it anyway, if he's since deleted his account.)

Hi Daniel, Please contact me - I am Percy Wicks great granddaughter - Lynne

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Jun 2017 12:20

Philip's son Brian was born in 1936 in Tynemouth.

As far as the online records go, he appears to be still alive.

He may perhaps have married in 1962 in Newcastle, and there are a couple of possible births of children in Northumberland - but unfortunately can't say for sure.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Jun 2017 12:11

Presumably the death of Percy's son Phillip:

Philip J C C Wicks
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Philip J C C Wicks
Birth Date: abt 1916
Date of Registration: Sep 1961
Age at Death: 45
Registration district: Gosport
Inferred County: Hampshire
Volume: 6b
Page: 270

There's no clear record of a second marriage - perhaps not all his initials were quoted.

ArgyllGran

Daughter's birth:

WICKS, MARY ELIZABETH CRADDOCK mms CRADDOCK

???

Mary E C Wicks
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Mary E C Wicks
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1967
Registration district: Bournemouth
Inferred County: Dorset
Spouse: Austen B Prude
Volume Number: 6b
Page Number: 577

Remarriage ??

Mary E C Prude
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Mary E C Prude
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1969
Registration district: Bournemouth
Inferred County: Dorset
Spouse: Baker, Frederick P
Volume Number: 6b
Page Number: 617

A wild guess re her possible death -

Mary Elizabeth Baker
in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Mary Elizabeth Baker
Birth Date: 14 Dec 1910
Date of Registration: Mar 1982
Age at Death: 71
Registration district: Poole
Inferred County: Dorset
Volume: 23
Page: 0633

It doesn't look as if she had any children. She would have been too old by the time she married Mr Prude, and there's no sign of a child before marriage.
