Hi, is this just a coincidence? 1891 census..looking for a James Gardiner/Gardener born 1849 ish St Lukes, marble polisher/stone mason. Found two fitting the description at two different addresses with remarkably similar M.O...one is a James Gardiner and the other is James Gardener both born 1849, both marble polishers, both born in St Lukes both living in Shoreditch both married to Jane's who are the same age, both have same kids, who are the same age. Huh? Is this the same person? Help, please?

There diffinately not the same person, you just have two James gardeners one born St Luke's and the other Clerkenwell who both happen to be Mason Marble Polishers.
Of course they could be related in some way.

Hey, thanks again for the info...and now I'm really confused.....the James I am looking for was married to an Emma at some point and because I found no trace of them in any other cenus or marriage record etc I assumed he married again to Jane because he absolutely fits the description (James Gardiner born in 1849 in St Luke and a marble polisher.) I cannot find a marriage record anywhere for him and Jane or him and Emma....why would this be? I'm not very good at this...Thanks again

Oh Heck, I'm off to take another couple of aspirin....your confused Frisco I have completely lost the plot!

Will have to wait for AuniteSherlocks next move!

AuntySherlock Report 4 Mar 2010 10:38

OK. Let's start again. I have left the comparison on the two James Gardiners married to Jane. I have deleted all my theories. I am confusing when I'm musing!!

Frisco.... Please tell us

You have a James Gardiner married to an Emma. How do you know this.

What is James' middle name and his date of birth.

What is Emma's maiden name. Date of birth?

Disregard the Gardiners married to Jane at this point.

We know from the census that James Gardiner was living with Emma and has at least three children.

Is the census where you have sourced their marriage?

Oh and PS. Please do not be concerned about "not being good at this". If you stick to it, believe me, by the time you sort out this little puzzle, you will be good at it!! One step at a time.

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 4 Mar 2010 10:53

AS,

Am I right in saying there is no GARDNER.......only 2no GARDINER

Tara Report 4 Mar 2010 10:54

Ok, thanks, here's what I know for sure. The William Gardiner born 1877 Green Arbour Court is my GG, his father James Gardiner born 1849 St Luke (source - 1881 census), Marble polisher/ Stone Mason(source - Will's birth cert ) was married (possibly not..can find no trace) to an Emma Jordan(source-Will's birth cert) I know nothing else about her.. and the 1881 census is the only record I have of them...they all disappear...until William pops up again in 1911. That's why I have convinced myself that this James Gardiner married to Jane is the right guy...am I barking up the wrong tree d'ya think?

AuntySherlock

AuntySherlock Report 4 Mar 2010 11:00

Thank you. That makes things a little easier.

I am currently going through the baptisms for children born to James and Emma Gardener/Gardiner.

There are more than several. Looking in particular at Alexander, James and William. Dates of birth between 1872 and 1877 ish. What I am looking for is the occupation of the father James.

Tara

Tara Report 4 Mar 2010 11:22

How about this for a theory....the only Emma Jordan I can find born in St Lukes in 1849 ish...is in the 1851 census....and she has a younger sister Jane born St Lukes...dya think James could have married them both? Am I being ridiculous now, wanting my ancestors to be more exciting than they were?

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 4 Mar 2010 11:41

Frisco,

i bet that happened quite often, if wife 1 died and hubby was left holding the baby.........or several!

My great grandfather was left with 4 kids when his wife died march 1901, he married her cousin 3 months later!
